Possibly one of the greatest works of literature ever written, Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, describes the travels and hardships of Odysseus in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Odysseus, son of Laertes, traverses all around the Mediterranean Sea, because he is led astray by the sea god Poseidon. He faces monsters, gods, and enemies, but with the help of Athena and the hospitable Phaeacians, he eventually returns home to Ithaca. Here he reunites with his son Telemachus, and they defeat the atrociously behaved suitors. Subsequently, he meets up with his wife for the first time in 20 years, and he reclaims the throne of Ithaca. Throughout his journey, Odysseus displays arête, the Greek word for excellence in all things. Odysseus embodies the traits of the ideal Greek epic hero by displaying arête through cleverness and leadership during his encounter with the cyclops, Polyphemus, and he displays arête through revenge when he kills all of the suitors. During Odysseus’ encounter with the cyclops, Polyphemus, Odysseus exhibits arête through cleverness and true leadership as he and his men escape from the one-eyed monster. Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon, finds Odysseus, who claims his name is “Noman,” and his men in his cave dining on the monster’s cheese and milk. This angers Polyphemus, and he soon devours two of Odysseus’ crew members. Then, rather than using brute force and killing the cyclops on the spot, he acts with cleverness and leadership. Odysseus offers him wine and intoxicates him, to the point where he falls asleep. Then, they sharpen and sear Polyphemus’ staff, and Odysseus describes to King Alcinous of Phaeacia, “...my men gathered round me, for heaven had filled their hearts with courage. We drove the sharp end of ... ... middle of paper ... ... qualifies as arête, therefore, the suitors’ impropriety justifies the violence used against them. The use of arête in this situation and many others proves that Odysseus obtains the traits of an epic hero. In conclusion, Odysseus proves to be an epic Homeric hero by using leadership and cleverly defeating Polyphemus, and by eradicating the suitors. During his encounter with Polyphemus, Odysseus shows his leadership by putting courage into his men’s hearts. He shows his cleverness by claiming his name was Noman, intoxicating Polyphemus, and by blinding the cyclops then escaping with its sheep. Odysseus also exhibits arête through revenge as he kills the suitors. The suitors’ poor behaviors makes the violence justified. Throughout Odysseus’ 20 year excursion, he constantly demonstrates arête, which makes him go down in history as one of the most famous epic heroes.
