Odysseus is a hero. He is perceived as a leader of intelligence, ingenious plans, and loyalty to his crew and home. But, is that really the case? The definition of a hero is a person who is admired for loyal and selfless achievements along with noble qualities. To contrast, a hero in Greek mythology was someone who contributed to society or who possessed a unique talent that set him apart from the rest. This plays into the definition of an epic hero who is noble and gallant while also being affected by great phenomenons and admired for his achievements. Throughout his long and dangerous journey, she guides him. In modern times, Athena is depicted as a smart, wise, graceful, and peaceful god. In contrast, Odysseus displayed trickery and inhumane strategies in both the Iliad and Odyssey. Athena's favor might have won over many readers which caused Odysseus to be the prime Greek hero he is today. Additionally, some might argue that Odysseus is seen as a hero because of his situation. Odysseus’ journey was certainly an epic tale that has been told for centuries about his encounters with Circe, Scylla, and the Sirens. These characters are also in other books and films with different heroes and villains. Finally, his intelligence may also make him appear more of a hero. Like many protagonists Odysseus has a special talent that separates him from the rest.
