Ever since I was younger people always asked what I would like to be when I grew up. At first I always wanted to become an engineer because of my love for hands on learning and my exceptional problem solving skills. However, when I grew older I found the similar spark of fascination in the medical field. I wanted to go into a profession where I could help others and use my love for problem solving and hands on interest. This is when I became interested in occupational therapy, and fell in love with the profession. I want to help people, and positively impact their lives. This is when I decided to major in occupational therapy; hopefully to specialize in working with children in the school systems. Many factors inspired me to major in occupational therapy. My first reason was when I tore my anterior cruciate ligament and needed a physical therapist to help me recover. After a year of physical therapy, I fully recovered and regained my ability to play soccer again. In doing so, that experience helped genuinely spark my interest in the medical field. The concept of aiding people to regain their full independents again is extremely gratifying to myself. Furthermore, another crucial reason that truly lead me to become an occupational therapist was observing one in action. My father needed an occupational therapist after he lost his limb, watching the practitioner in action helping my father recover was intriguing to myself. In that moment, I knew I wanted to become as well. The final motive that solidified my reasoning for pursing occupational therapy is that occupational therapist can work with any one. Although I want to specialize in the school system and work with children, the idea of not being confined to a certain area is amazing. There is a massive demand of writing because the prerequisites involve a lot of science, English and physiology based classes. A student studying occupational therapy especially does a lot of writing when the student beings their field work. When I decided to choose, this major I knew I would need to expand my writing skills. Since any major in the medical field involves extensive work in writing research papers. When I began to start college, I did not have a lot of education in writing research papers. Although I attempted to prepare myself to the best of my ability I still was weak in writing research papers. I made it a goal to learn how to correctly write one, and that is why I took research and writing in the disciplines. As taking this class has helped clarify how to write a research paper in many different formats such as, MLA and APA. In doing so, this class has also taught me how to correctly cite in papers, it has become asset in sharpening my writing skills. Which I will need because I will be attending graduate school for my major and they will demand a well written researcher paper. I also continue to sharpen my writing skills to prepare myself because in many of my classes I have written a research paper and now have become familiar with the format for theses essay.
