Zipping up your jacket, tying your shoes, folding your clothes, and cookinng dinner are all task that are done on a daily basis by most people who don’t have to think twice about them. However, these are skills that many people can struggle with. To combat this, we have people in the health care field that are specially trained not only to teach these skills, but to teach adaptations for how to do these skills in varying different ways. This field of medical care is occupational therapy (OT).

However, research extends so much further than that and can be clearly seen in the field of occupational therapy. In the OT field, research is very useful as it can provide evidence for different types of techniques that will be beneficial to clients. Occupational therapy involves nature based intervention where they are exploring how these techniques work within a patient’s natural environment (Wagenfeld et. al., 2017). There is a growing demand for occupational therapists as people learn more about what their expertise can be used for. In one research study, they looked at the mental state of many correctional officers working in correctional facilities. To try to improve their mental state, the research team included occupational therapists as they were able to provide naturalistic interventions that could be used on the job to help with the improvements that were being looked at (Wagenfeld, 2017). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2016) there is estimated to be a 21% growth in this field. Kendra explained the growth that she is seeing surrounding her field as more events are occurring to perpetuate the need. Events such as the Flint Water Crisis are calling more attention to the field as occupational therapists will be on the team that can help those who are affected by this disaster recover in learning their daily living
