At the Oakes Public Schools, the coaching contract is a section of the teachers negotiated agreement. The contract also states that all efforts will be made to fill all extracurricular positions with teaching faculty, and any community members may have their job re-posted following the season, regardless of performance. For faculty members, the contract is also annual, and renewed pending evaluation. North Dakota does not have tenure, so all teachers are year-to-year employees, as are coaches. Coaches are evaluated annually, at which point faculty members are offered contract renewal if deemed appropriate. The negotiating committee determined that the full-time salary of a coach was $33,000, with experience steps of $350, up to 15 years of experience. Experience must be verified, and must have been at the junior high level or higher. Coaches are then paid a percentage of that salary based on their position. Head varsity coaches receive 13%, assistant varsity coaches receive 9.5%, c-squad coaches receive 7%, and JH coaches and the head golf coach receives 6%. The golf coach receives only 6% as it is only an 8-week season, where all other varsity seasons are between 13 and 16 weeks. For every additional week of tournament competition teams qualify for head varsity coaches receive $150, and assistant varsity coaches receive $100. Oakes is clearly in compliance with Title IX, as all coaches are on the same schedule, regardless of gender of the coach or program.
