Mrs. Annette Noel is the elder used for this project. She is the mother of a friend who resides in the neighborhood. The client is an 81- years- old who was recently widowed. She has been moved to Florida March 2010, after the earthquake in Haiti. She lives in a one-story home with her daughter of 50, her granddaughter is a physical therapy assistant and her niece is a nursing student at Broward College. The client has as well two sons and their family who live close by her house. The client’ highest level of education is elementary, she can barely read in a French bible and she speaks only Creole. The client was very functioning during her early age in Haiti. She used to travel back in forth from Haiti to Dominican Republic to buy and sell clothing from one country to another. She owned also a retail food store. Since migrated from Haiti to the United Sated, Annette took the responsibly to help her daughter and her sons, who are all three very busy, in some house’ chores such as cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. Client has any history of hospitalization. The client is able to manage the disease by taking her medications in regular basis and by eating low salt diet food. Recently, for the pass tree months, client has fell twice while getting out of them --------- the client was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many joints, including those in the hands and the feet. Joyce Stewart is seventy two year old, white female that lives in the small town of Candor New York. She has spent the majority of her life taking care of other people, including her eight children; now six due to tragic circumstances. When caring for a client of Haitian descent, it is important to be mindful of language and education level, religious and cultural beliefs, and traditional health maintenance practices that may be incompatible with modern medicine. The healthcare provider should respect these cultural differences and be accommodating whenever possible to promote the spiritual and physical well-being of the client.
Client shared numerous physical concerns that should be tackled right away. Client explained a fall at home was the initial reason for the visit. While client refuses to go to see a doctor it would be advised client check to make sure there’s no fractures in the bones. At the doctor it would be detrimental to discuss if the diabetes played any effect into the fall. Lastly, it would be ideal the client got a professional opinion on whether her medications are adequate. It’s evident that in order to tackle the psychological barriers, the physical concerns are also priority.
Throughout the Practical Nursing program, there has been many opportunities to closely observe working nurses in different hospitals and facilities. It also has been a great chance to grasp the general idea about professionalism in the workplace and how it can have a great impact in a successful work environment. Combining what was observed and what was learnt from the class, there were three particular aspects of professionalism that seemed to be key characteristics of professional nurses: knowledge from continuous education, autonomy, and positivity. Out of all other characteristics for professionalisms in nursing, those three were the most remarkable features found from the some of the great nurses observed from the clinical sites.
Emergency room nursing is a very rewarding job. Unlike other specialty nursing units in the emergency room the nurse never aware of what might walk in the door next. This can be scary and for the adrenaline junkie exciting. With the fact the nurse never know what might walk in the emergency room nurse needs to have a large knowledge base. This includes that of infection control.
Ms. Gm, my client, lived alone in the community housing corporation. On this faithful morning my patient woke-up complaining of severe headache, fatigue, inability to sleep, dyspnea and dizziness. Following this situation she was taken to the hospital by a neighbor and while she was in the emergency department she was seen by the physician where she was diagnosed with hypertension.
“We can’t turn away from a patient’s pain just because it’s difficult” (chapman, 2015, p. 88). I know the path of least resistance is taking a path of ignorance. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. There are many who believe that the next shortage will be worse and the demand for nurses will increase. There will be more jobs available especially with the baby boomer nurses retiring. Wood believes that when nurses retire, the next shortage could be even worse than the previous shortage. According to Alexander, Frith, and Hoy (2015), a workaround is defined as when a problems arise within the workflow and a worker uses an unauthorized way around the health information technology system. This being said, workarounds are present in the hustle and bustle of the stressful hospital workflow, and in return can potentially lead to negative consequences. As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
In 1990, my aunt Ann started experiencing heart-problems. My family was very close to Ann because she lived only a block away. Aunt Ann would walk over to our house everyday for a visit.
