Nurses carry a lot of responsibilities toward the patient within the health care professionals. Thus, it is possible that mistakes can happen from the nurses. However, I believe in reflecting them and learning more from them so that it is not being repeated in the future.
This piece of reflection is when I was new in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). I was assigned to take care of a patient who had mitral valve replacement (MVR) and was on postoperative day 3. The report received from the previous nurse stated the patient had MVR was on day 3 with an only central venous line instituted. Since I was fairly new in the ICU, I reviewed myself about taking care of the patient with such a line and consulted my colleague how to administer medication and manage the line safely to avoid any harm on the patient. As a part of professional growth, to enhance my competency, my supervisor recommended that, I attend continuous nursing education (CNE)(Hospital conducts CNE on the various topics every month). In addition to that, I attended case presentation done by one of our senior nurses to make people aware of recognizing and reporting potentially unsafe practice and its importance. I realized that after the classes and practicing sampling with a colleague, I was more confident in performing it independently and gained more knowledge on the process.
Upon reflection, this incident had made me show my professional conduct by reporting and going through the process, which also helped me in empowering myself with more knowledge and practice. And I feel every incident caused and reported prepares and aware the other members of the team to learn from
