Women, children, and families have better lives because of the work of certified nurse-midwives. I have always wanted to make a difference-and have a positive influence on health care, which has lead me to my interest of the midwifery profession. To learn more about midwifery I chose to interview Kathleen London-Lopes. Mrs. Lopes is a board certified nurse midwife at Highland Obstetrics and Gynecology, in Fallriver Massachusetts. Along with the information she gave me about being a midwife I also researched information on onetonline.org. I believe my desire to care for others and promote women and infant health are two qualities I posses to become a successful nurse midwife. A midwife is more than just delivering babies. Kathleen is a board certified nurse midwife and a member of American College of Nurse Midwives. A midwife is usually the first and main contact for the expectant mother during her pregnancy, and throughout labor. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Rhode Island. She also attended the midwifery program at the University of Rhode Island where she earned a master of science degree. To become a midwife the minimum degree you can achieve is a bachelors, but almost all jobs require a masters degree. Kathleen informed me that there are three certifications offered: Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Certified Midwife (CM), or Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).If you are a nurse first, then you can get your CNM. If you aren 't, and you are trained formally at a school where your education is accredited by a place recognized by the ACNM, then you can be a CM if you pass the certification exam. Some states are not yet recognizing a CM to practice though. CPM certification also does not require you to be a nurse, but is only available in certain states in the United
