In today’s world, racism is a mere glimpse of the past. We are so often educated about it, yet we face it rarely and if we encounter it, it is as subtle as a double take based on your colour. Our racism today is very light compared to racism faced in the past. The novel Noughts and Crosses is set in a world where racism is normal, the conventional way of living in their society. In Noughts and Crosses, Marie Blackman demonstrates the act of racism influencing the actions of the characters. Consequently, the character Callum McGregor is one of the characters who let racism and discrimination determine his actions made. Jason, was furious with his response, thus he sent him to speak with the principal. Callum’s frustration leads to him lashing out at the principal, and he was simply told to obey Mr. Jason. The thoughts from Callum about history were disregarded by Mr. Jason due to the fact that Callum was a Nought, he was promoting noughts in a predominantly Cross school, and Mr. Jason, a Cross, had not liked that. The racism Callum faced due to him being a different colour, resulted in Callum being sent to the office and lashing out. His anger towards the racism between Noughts and Crosses further developed throughout the book, this event was one initiator of that. The act of discrimination towards Callum had not only been encountered once, but many times. After the bombing had occurred and Callum's dad, Ryan Mc Gregor, was a suspect for the crime committed, the principal of Heathcroft asked Callum to speak with him. Mr. Costa, the principal, suspended Callum as his dad was suspect. Callum took the suspension as another way to get rid of the Noughts one by one. The others Noughts attending the school had been expelled except for Callum. Callum had no fear when speaking to Mr. Costa and abruptly told him “Three down, only one more to
