Nonverbal communication is a way of communicating without the use of words. It is the interpretation of one’s physical appearance to understand what they are thinking or feeling without them actually saying it. Nonverbal communication is used by smiling to tell someone that you are happy, angry by crossing your arms, and sad by the tears rolling down your face. With most of our everyday language consisting of nonverbal communication it is important for one to understand how their body language is affecting their conversation.

Individual status is communicated using nonverbal communication by many factors. An obvious nonverbal behavior to express ones status would be to wear a wedding ring to show other’s that they are married. Another example is ones clothing, if they are wearing a police uniform then it is easy to know that they must be an officer. One’s physical appearance effects how others interpret our messages. Such as if one is attractive then someone may listen to them more closely. Also if one is wearing old dirty clothes then others may tend to avoid them. Our gestures involve moving our hands. This allows us to wave to say hi than actually having to verbally say it. It also allows one to point in a direction and have someone understand what they are trying to tell them without using words. Our facial behavior the way we react using our face. It could let someone know that one is listening to them. It is a way of giving feedback in a conversation, such as raising our eyebrows when someone says something shocking. Nonverbal communication can also be affected by whether or not one is making eye contact. It could let another person know if they are interested in the conversation. Our vocal behavior also helps others tell if we are telling the truth or not. If we pause and get tongue tied when we are asked if dinner is good then that could make them believe that we are lying. Nonverbal communication is also affected by space and territoriality. Sitting in the same chair everyday nonverbally tells everyone around that it is our spot. The way one stands near someone can show whether or not they actually want to be there talking to them, such as standing in front of them versus standing angled away from them.
