Welfare is the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group, or in more common terms, a family. Happiness is one of the major key points to build a stable family. Small events like family vacations, mother-daughter phone calls, and even having an occasional family reunion can influence a person and the way they act. This can lead to happiness or simply divorce. The percentage of married couples dropped from 72% in 1960 to 52% in 2008, and, sadly, the percentage of married couples divorcing went from 5% to 14% in the span of those forty-eight years. Welfare can be defined as “systems by which government agencies provide economic assistance, goods, and services to persons who are unable to care for themselves” (Issitt). The United States welfare system is an extremely complex and unique entity that encompasses ideas and concepts from an abundance of different places. Many people believe the current system is an excellent resource for the population, while others believe the current welfare system requires reform and budget cuts to become effective.
Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic novel The Road displays different concepts of nuclear and non-nuclear families throughout the novel. In The Road the reader is introduced to different types of individuals and non-nuclear families and how they succeed in a post-apocalyptic world. Nuclear families are what many consider to be a traditional family, consisting of a mother, father, and children while non-nuclear families are families that are considered untraditional. However, when a traditional family is introduced the reader sees the failures of nuclear families rather than their success while non-nuclear families appear to be more likely to succeed in the sense of survival. It can be very beneficial to people in need of it. Tim Prenzler stated that, “Welfare systems are often seen as providing a ‘safety net’ that prevents citizens falling below a minimum standard of living (2012, p2). Everyone is able to use is if they are in need of it. People have successfully used welfare to get out of their slum, and started to support themselves. Others have decided to not try to get out of that slum, and live off that welfare. They decided that they didn’t have to try, and let the government support them. Welfare is a good tool for people to get back on their feet, but shouldn’t be that persons steady income.

In society today there tends to exist a nostalgia for the utopian family life of the past.
As people we like to think to ourselves that we are great people who care about everyone in the world around us. But we need to come to a point in our lives where we ask ourselves, are we really who we think we are? Am I really a kind person who wants everyone to be happy? Am I really the person that people want to come to when they need help with something? By asking ourselves these questions, we can come to realize who we really are. We won’t have to worry about what people think of us because we will have a strong interpretation of who we really are.

The Decline of Traditional Family Being Detrimental to Society Some people believe that the decline of the traditional family (Nuclear family) is detrimental to society because a lot of people are not socialising. The television sitcom Modern Family produced by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd shows the many different types of a modern American family. According to Andrew Hampp, “The show is among the most-viewed scripted programs in prime time in its second season, averaging 11 million viewers during original airings and often ranked as the most DVRed program most weeks” (2). The television show is a frequently watched show and is liked by many viewers. Modern Family's storyline helps the families of viewers by being an influential and relatable show to different types of families. The show is about the lives of three different families that are all related. In the show there are Jay and Gloria, an intergenerational couple with two sons-- Manny (from Gloria’s previous relationship) and Joe, their new baby. Jay’s adult son Cameron is married to his gay partner Mitchell, and they adopted Lily from Vietnam. Finally, Jay’s daughter Claire is married to her heterosexual partner named Phil and they have three children. The show is influential to our culture today because it shows these different types of families and addresses controversial themes such as gay adoption, the different family connections and communications, intergenerational coupling, and acceptance of diversity within an extended family. The family is easy to relate to while watching because it is based off of real family situations.
The unit of a family is the most prominent essential for all of us. As social human beings, we seek social support in order to thrive, and that is where family comes into play. A family is where you receive love, support, encouragement, and many other social benefits. The total number of households in the United States increased from 63 million in 1970 to 113 million in 2008 (Weeks, 2012). The family has influenced multitudes of people in many ways. The traditional family in the United States consists two-married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring also know as the nuclear family. However, the term of a true family has ultimately changed over the last 50 years especially for African Americans.
A social structure is made up from our surroundings and shape how individuals and groups interact and behave. This can include institutions, norms, and social hierarchies (New York University Department of Sociology, 2013). The definition of family has changed over the years and can be different for different people. A family is a group of people that have a legal connection that can be through marriage, adoption, or blood. It can also be made up by a positon of honor or need that is not a legal connection with people or pets you choose and share a close intimate bond with. It is beneficial to reflect on family as a social structure because this is where we all learn how to be a part of society and why we have roles. This is where we can learn what happens when roles breakdown and how to interact with others in a safe and nurturing environment. The family unit is a vital part of the seminarian’s preparation for ministry. This was true for me early in my marriage of thirty-nine years. My husband, Thomas, served as a pastor for thirteen years before passing away last year. Therefore, I could relate personally to the experiences noted by Benjamin Forrest for female spouses of seminary students. Especially the practical enhancers that added to the spiritual formation of the spouse. “Been there done that,” was the phrase I echoed while reading each experience. As a wife and mother of four grown children, I learned early there was no greater witness for Christ than the love shown in the family unit before the world. For as long as can remember, the ideal family household consisted of the male/father as the bread winner, provider, and head of the household, and female/mother, and children as members of this family. The popular television show Modern Family is unique in the sense that it opposes what people usually see on TV and correctly portrays real and modern families. This TV show does not depict the usually incorrect and outdated gender roles that are quite common on TV in our world today, it depicts real families not within what might consider the “social norms”. This popular TV opposes the regular taboos and gender roles society has implemented and depicts the lives of normal and modern people.
Family reunion plays a very important role for every Chinese. People left home for working, studying, far away from their hometowns and families, will always come back to home in the Chinese Festival. As a student studying aboard, I have missed the big day twice, which means that I have not see everyone in my family for two years. In my memory, red is a symbol of Spring Festival.
