Nursing and non-nursing theories provide a foundation for safe, effective and quality care. It serves to “inform and give meaning to practice” (Veo, 2010, p. 17)Click and drag to move as well as improving morale, communication and guide practice (Veo, 2010). Although many exist, two are of use to most applications as they are both logical and generalizable. The non-nursing theory Maslow’s Hierarchy and Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory which is specific to nursing are both inter relatable and applicable enabling nurses to provide superior treatment and generate optimal outcomes.

Abraham Maslow developed a theory based on human needs in 1943. This motivational based hierarchy is one of the most utilized and understood models. It is often depicted in images of a pyramid, with basic physiological needs of water, air, food, warmth, sex, sleep and shelter acting as the bottom layer. Following this foundation, are the needs for safety including physical protection, security, safety, law and order. Next, the need for loving and belonging are addressed. Henderson’s theory can be applied to the Maslow model easily. The physiological needs which encompass the first components would fall under the primary level Maslow described. The need for safety is addressed in both models as well. Henderson’s communication and worship requirements apply to the love and belongingness stage described by Maslow and the remaining components apply to the self esteem level.
