Divorce happens almost every day in America, there is one divorce approximately every 36 seconds, according to Irvin McKinley (2012). McKinley goes on to write that that is nearly 2,400 divorces per day, 16,800 divorces per week and 876,000 divorces a year. Sometimes, it’s the way of life we can’t control people’s marriage and make it a better relationship, but we certainly want to make it less tragic to the ones who will get affected. The main cause of divorce is very simple it is either the lack of romantic feelings or cheating on the husband or wife. Since divorce is an ongoing condition and has been increasing lately, people have begun to look at it as a pathetic thing and normal. Regardless of the causes, no one wins in divorce because it impacts negatively in many ways. Therefore, divorce mostly negatively affects the children, wife, and husband in a family.
One of the earliest noticeable negative effects of divorce is on children’s academic life. They are the ones who are strongly affected, because they might think it is their fault because of their parent’s divorce. In addition, they have to learn how to overcome and deal with their parent’s divorce at a very early age, which is very difficult because the child must get support to get through one of the most difficult situations in their lives. For example, Sara, my cousin, experienced her parent’s divorce at a very young age. Which led her to consider adapting to a new life change. Sara went through a lot of pressure, depression, and giving up on many things that she had when her parents were by her side. To conclude, negatively affecting the academic life of children, depressing the wife, and the regret of the husband is often due to divorce. All and all, divorce has a massive negative effect on the people around it especially children in a family. In fact, as William Shatner writes, “Divorce is probably as painful as death” (Brainy Quote, n.d.). By this statement Shatner explains to us that divorce is a massive mistake that leads to affecting the whole family.

In the 21st century, divorce has become commonplace not only in the United States, but in many parts of the world. Franklin and Boddie (2004) reported that within 10 years about 40-50% of American marriages end in divorce. In 2009, the divorce rate in the United States stood at 3.6 per 1,000 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). Divorce, however, is not only a social issue, but it has serious health implications. Divorce has been researched extensively and is considered an adverse event (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). Adverse events such as personal or parental divorce has been linked to many ailments and conditions including substance abuse, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and premature mortality (Sbarra, Law, & Portley, 2011; CDC, 2009).
Divorces are more common than they were generations ago. In a Time/CNN survey released in august 1997 which showed that the largest population of respondents (45%) answered that marriage is not taken seriously by most of the couples because they always end up getting divorced. Sixty four percent also believed that couples should get lessons on marriage before getting married (“public opinion”). Divorce can be caused by problems such as drugs, adultery, abuse, and money. The United States is a fast-paced country with little to no time to spend on the basic family values it was founded upon. Jobs are more demanding, kids are spending most of their time with people other than their parents, and the economy drains marriages by causing worry and stress. The foundation upon which marriage was built has been shaken.

Such an unfavorable problem has been increasing, because in 1969, the legislation of California State changed the divorce laws, where spouses could leave without providing causes (Child Study Center, 2001). That simple word to some may bring feelings of shame and disgust, while to others it can represent a fresh start and safety from a bad situation. Most people, when thinking about divorce, worry about the impact that it has on the children that are involved. Even though children are most likely better off if totally incompatible parents separate instead of staying together, divorce is about loss and change, and it is still hard for children. Everyone knows that divorce has its effects on children. There are three different sources that try to explain these effects. Graham Blaine Jr. states that divorce is a threat to all children, whereas Rhona Mahony states that divorce is not always the cause of behavioral or academic problems in children coming from divorced families. Yvette Walczak and Sheila Burns state that the extent of the damage can be determined by the parents and their methods of explanation to the children.
Sociological Analysis of Divorce as a Social Problem and Proposed Solutions Every year approximately 2.4 million marriages occur. Out of those,2.1 millionwill file for divorce in the United States. These marriage and divorce rates have significantly increased since the years past(Coltrane and Adams, 364).According to Schoen, in the 1950’s, 15 out of 1,000 marriages ended in divorce. In the 1970’s, the rates of divorcedoubled,increasing to 40 per 1,000 marriages. Currently, the rate of marriages resulting in divorce remains the same.
The article “Divorce and Its Effects on Children” by Kelvin L. Seifert and Robert J. Hoffnung states about the effects of the divorce under the children. The authors say “most parents who divorce must make major adjustments in their lives, and these adjustments often affect their children deeply.”(Kelvin, Robert, 1). Most of the adjustments are different by the children gender and sometimes the relationship between parents and their children deteriorate during and immediately after a divorce.

One tough thing about today's American family is divorce. In 1816, one marriage out of one hundred ended in divorce. Then between the years 1869-1888, divorce increased up to one hundred and fifty percent. And the worse, between the years 1960-1980, the divorce rate increased up to two hundred and fifty percent. Divorce rates peaked in 1981 and then started to decline a little during the mid 1980's. However, divorce rates now are as high as they have ever been. It is unfortunate that marriages sometimes end and there are children caught in the middle of the marriage but it may be worst for the parents to stay together simply for the children’s sake. However when parents do divorce the children are the most effected by the divorce. Often enough the divorce causes children to feel displaced and also to have feelings that their world is coming to an end. These children tend to grow into adults with either extreme emotional detachment and self-esteem issues or they will have strong family values and try to prevent the cycle from repeating itself but the majority of these children grow up suffering from the divorce.
Not only does divorce affects a child academic development but it also affects their emotional development as well. Divorce has a great influence on a child's self-confidence. Most of these changes are due to a change in the way that a child views him or herself. Due to my own experience of coming from a divorced family, I have also met several children who have the same experience as I do. The increase of divorce is becoming the norm among families. It has become fairly easy to get a divorce in today’s world. Many parents have different views on whether divorce is bad or good. Contrary to the claim of parents views that divorce causes negative effects on children, divorce should be accepted in today’s society in order for the children to grow up in a peaceful environment, bonding with their parents in a neutral ground.
