“The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame (Wilde).” Books are written to help the people who chose to read them, and to me they should have the right to choose the books they want to read. Even though some of the content may seem explicit, most people would agree that that is not the theme of the book. Authors chose to specifically put certain topics into their writing because they know what they want to show their audience. I believe Burned should not be banned from schools because it has great moral lessons to teach teenagers.
Burned is a story about a young teenage girl named Pattyn. Even though Pattyn has grown up in a strict religious Mormon environment, her family is very abusive. Her father drinks heavily and beats Pattyn’s mother for no reason, even when she’s pregnant. The Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Even though books may influence young minds with negative thinking, society shouldn’t ban books because it prohibits learning and it violates the First Amendment in the Constitution. Banning books takes away the author’s right, some books can be very educational, and it takes away the children’s choice of what they get to read.

With the thought that someone can be hurt by reading a book, people will try to challenge and ban them. To ban a book is to have it restricted from a certain age or audience. Banning and challenging books is trying to keep a certain book away from an audience due to sexual content, going against religious beliefs, language and vulgarity, violence, drugs, self-harm, racism, occult/satanic views, promoting gangs, and going against community standards. An argument from someone who believes books should not be banned is that it is important for the age group to learn about certain content and material as they grow up. Books including and not limited to, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm all have one thing in common. They have all at one time or another been subject to banishment. These literary classics have been around for a long time and proved to be vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents. These novels teach values and educate children about world affairs that can not come from an everyday experience. For many years schools have banned books from being taught to their students because of parent complaints. These books have been shunned from the criteria, which may or may not affect the student’s understanding on a specific subject. People have been fighting to have these books banned because of excessive use of profanity, violence, sex, drugs and many other reasons. They do not look further in the books to see exactly what the author is trying to portray. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is banned in various places in the United States. This book should not be banned because, this book shows an important part in our history, it is not pro-racism, and it shows how far along we have come since then.

Literature can be a powerful tool, the Nazis were able to see this, thousands of books were burned during the Nazi regime for many reasons, but this didn’t stop people from finding ways to preserve literature. The Nazis burned books as an act to control people, hatred of the Jews, and fear of different ideology. Around the world people were shocked and took action against this act of war on literature. American publishing houses started to produce books for the soldiers fighting in the war against the Nazis. Two libraries were also built, they were different but with a similar goal, in order to fight against the war the Nazis had started against literature. The Nazis succeeded in burning thousands of books in an attempt to control people but they were unable to stop people from finding ways to continue fighting for their own ideas through literature.
