The Nintendo 64 is one of the most revolutionary technological breakthroughs in the history of mankind. This masterfully crafted device is known as a home video game console. The purpose of this console was to deliver hours upon hours of entertainment to people of all ages. It was a means of escaping from reality in order to indulge in entertainment that took place in what can arguably be called a “new world.” The factors that made the Nintendo 64 so revolutionary, and successful are the result of the vast amounts of effort Nintendo had poured into the console and its video games. The Nintendo 64 supports exactly 16.8 million colors. The console is able to display resolutions of 640 x 480, 320 × 240, and 256 × 224 pixels. A select number of games made extensive use of the 640 × 480 feature. Many of them demanded support from the Expansion Pak’s Random Access Memory upgrade. As a matter of fact, the large majority of games used the system's lower resolution of 256 × 224 (256 × 240 for PAL models). A few of these games using either Anamorphic widescreen or Letterboxing, also had the ability support a video display ratio of up to 16:9. The controller had an interestingly unique and innovative design. It clearly resembled the letter “M”, and it also featured a joystick in the center, which was crucial to the overall experience of the Nintendo 64 gameplay. American Magazine, “Popular Electronics called its shape "evocative of some alien space ship." While noting that the three handles could be confusing, the magazine said "the separate grips allow different hand positions for various game types.” Later on in the Nintendo 64’s life span, Nintendo had released this peripheral platform that went by the name of Nintendo 64DD. The 'DD' is an acronym for “Disk Drive”. This Disk Drive was to meant be connected to the expansion slot located at the bottom surface of the console. One of the functionalities of the 64DD is that it converts the Nintendo 64 gaming system into an Internet appliance as well as an extended gaming console. This great peripheral enables players to play Nintendo 64 disk-based games, capture images from an external video source, and connect to the Japanese Randnet online service which is now defunct. Shortly after its limited mail-order release, this revolutionary add-on had ceased to sell on the market. In other words, it was discontinued.
