What are the possibilities that the unordinary can be the extraordinary? Nikki Giovanna, author of the poem Ego-Tripping (there may be a reason why), is an activist, writer, educator, and poet who originally published this poem in 1972 in a collection of poetry titled My House. Furthermore, Giovanna’s inspiration towards creating this poem is the Black Arts Movement, Civil Rights Movement, Equal Rights Amendment, first trip to Africa, and through her personal experiences as an African American female. Noah is remarkable due to the biblical story of God sparing Noah, his family, and two sets of each animal species from the flooding. Giovanna correlates birth of science, religion, royalty, fearlessness, and pain within the continent of Africa. Africa is a location that is continuously being ripped of its natural resources, culture, knowledge, and nobility. The three continents that are persistent to plagiarize the African communities labor are Asia, Europe, and North America. It is ironic how Africa is well-known for poverty and illiteracy by these countries, but these countries continue to purloin Africa for centuries to make themselves superlative. How can you acknowledge the resources and work of Africa, without first recognizing African people and Africa itself? For this reason, Giovanna introduce her daughter Nefertiti as being the queen who ruled Egypt alongside the pharaoh Akhenaton. The name Nefertiti defines beauty and since she describes herself as the mother in which makes her twice as beautiful. Also, Giovanna informs the readers that a woman is perfect and surreal. There is no one that can comprehend her astounding existence and contributions to society without her explaining. A woman is a temple that should be praised and must receive respect by every man. Many well-known male characters have a woman who are undervalued by society, but are the reason for that male’s success. For instance, Barack Obama has Michelle Obama, Jay Z has Beyoncé, Bill Gates has Melinda Gates, Adam has Eve, and Martin Luther King Jr has Coretta Scott King. Men may have the face and appearance of greatness, but women will always have the brains and spirit to be a leader.
