Words and Their Impact
Words are what we use to communicate everyday. Whether we use them to write or speak, These words can impact the emotions of others. These emotions cause relationships to form, people to live and people to die in The Book Thief by Mark Zusak and Night by Elie Wiesel.
In The Book Thief bonds are created through words. Hans Hubermann and Liesel develop their relationships through the reading lessons and afternoon reading sessions. This helps Liesel to view Hans as a fatherly figure instead of a stranger. The words make Liesel trust Hans and move away from the thought that her mother would come back. When he got the news that he was doing good in Hitler Youth, he was also asked to go to military school. His parents absolutely refused and he didn’t go. Later when the bombs were dropped, because Rudy was there, he got hit and died. Words also cause Frau Holtzpafel to pass. Her son had previously been in rough place and this caused him to commit suicide. When Mrs. Holtzapfel heard of this her health state began to to deteriorate. Eventually this caused her to die. Hitler’s words helped him come to power, His convincing tone and strong ideals helped him create a following and rise to power. This was how Hitler got people to kill Jews. The quote “She had seen a Jewish man who had twice given her the most beautiful pages of her life marched to a concentration camp. And at the center of it all she saw the Führer shouting his words and passing them around.”(Zusak 521) shows the impact of Hitler’s words on the Jewish community.
