News and information media has made a huge impact on American culture. The way people get information in today’s society has changed so much, and with it comes much responsibility. In this paper I will be discussing if information media has a social responsibility, the role information technology has on shaping political opinions, as well as how electronic media convergence has transformed journalism and news consumption. This is because the majority of people get the knowledge on what is happening through media outlets such as the Internet and television. According to the article from USA Today (2008), “the media are the watchdog of all three branches [judicial, legislative, and executive], and they keep the public informed of the government’s activities – both good and bad”. Information and news media is able to reach the masses, and the opinions many people have on politics are dependent on what type of information journalists are choosing to release to the public. Information media has so much power in that aspect because society will form an opinion based on what is being put out in the media. Before media went electronic with the internet, journalists and reporters would only be able to send out information to the press at a certain time every morning. By then another news source could end up with the story and release it first. Now with electronic media convergence, once information is obtained it is released immediately online. People are able to stay updated to the minute of what is going on in society. The negative aspect of that is that sometimes information is released before it was able to be fact checked which means it isn't always reliable. To avoid putting out unreliable information, journalists have to be very skilled at fact checking as quick as possible and posting it online before someone else does. However even knowing this people in today's society prefer to get the majority of their information from the internet because it is the most up to date. Not to mention it is much more convenient to obtain information through the internet. People are able to pick up their smart phone or tablet from virtually anywhere and look up anything they could think of. This beats waiting until 10 o'clock news on TV or the morning
