African Americans Shut Out of New Deal Derek Hergenrader The New Deal was played a big part in U.S history in which we the people segregated blacks and whites even more, by lowering pay scales for blacks and making sure no one of color can afford to live and migrate to the suburbs. African Americans normally revealed to the party of Abraham Lincoln by voting overwhelmingly Republican. In the end of Roosevelt’s first term, one dramatic shift in American history had happened. 75 percent of black voters supported the Democrats In 1936. Blacks agreed with Roosevelt's ideas, in such, because his programs spent a lot of money giving relief from the great depression and, in a way the the GOP also referred as the Great Old Party had done little to nothing to support these individuals. …show more content…

Instead of using New Deal programs to engage people in civil rights, the party persistently rounded to discrimination. In order to cast these uppermost New Deal codifications, Roosevelt desired the support of southern Democrats. Time and time again, he backed away from equal rights to avoid antagonizing southern whites; although, his wife, Eleanor, did take a public stand in support of civil rights. Most New Deal programs discriminated against blacks. The NRA, for example, not only offered whites the first crack at jobs, but authorized separate and lower pay scales for blacks. The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) refused to guarantee mortgages for blacks who tried to buy in white neighborhoods, and the CCC maintained segregated camps.
