The brain, it's part of the nervous system. It controls everything you do. Every action you make, from picking up a water bottle to answering a question on a test. Sometimes it breaks, and we need someone to fix it. Often we take it for granted. Sooner or later what controls your whole body breaks, or gets damaged. That's where neurosurgeons come in. The brain is extremely complicated and delicate, just like Neurosurgery. It is one of the most advanced, difficult specialties in surgical medicine. It involves everything that controls what you do. Small mistakes in surgery can lead to terrible outcomes. This is a very common procedure for hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is when there is fluid build up in the brain. This causes pressure in the skull, and can damage the brain. Short term fix is called ventriculostomy catheter, this is used when build up is due to trauma, or for acute hydrocephalus. Long term causes need a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Sometimes called VP. This controls where the liquid flows. Usually makes the fluid go into the abdomen. A ventriculopleural shunt redirected the fluid into the chest. A ventriculoatrial shunt shunt drains the excess fluid into the bloodstream. This procedure is very common. It helps a lot of people. and saves many lives. (hydrocephalus)
A Laminectomy, a common procedure that opens the spinal cord. Usually to expose it. The plate made of bone, on each of your vertebrae and called the lamia. This procedure is to remove the lamia. Which allows surgeons to excess the spinal cord. Surgeons do this procedure to relieve compression on spinal cords. If the patient has a tumor, this approach allows the surgeons to open of the back to get a posterior approach. This is part of many surgerys and a base to many complicated
