Nepomuk Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto in E is one of the most famous pieces in the trumpet repertoire and one of Hummel’s most recognizable works. Hummel had a very close connection to Mozart and his works, which helped establish a foundation for Hummel’s compositional style. His studies and friendship were no doubt an influence in creating this masterpiece for the trumpet. When listening to Hummel’s concerto for trumpet, one can find direct references Mozart’s Don Giovanni and other works by Mozart. The Western concert flute was developed over the centuries from a simple end-blown flute to the current transverse flute. Transverse flutes are flutes that are held parallel to the floor. To play a transverse, the flutist directs the airstream across the mouth or blow hole and not directly into the instrument. The flute constitutes one of the most important instruments of the orchestra because of its high range, ability to blend in with other instruments and play the melody.
On February 23, I attended the 17th Annual Sphinx Competition held at the Detroit Orchestra Hall. The concert was phenomenal, and surprisingly enough to me I actually relished the performance. The reason the concert satisfied me was due to the fact of the meaning that was upheld throughout the concert. The Sphinx Orchestra is an amazing foundation in which supports Black and Latino string classical musicians and gives them a chance to better their life through the prodigious gift of scholarships. At this specific concert three finalist strived to see who truly has the utmost talent amongst the three. The three musicians included nineteen year old bassist, Xavier Foley; twenty-one year old cellist, Nicholas Mariscal; and twenty year old violinist, Clayton Penrose-Whitmore. Each musician did an extraordinary and gave the impression that they played their pieces flawlessly. Although all the young musicians achieved mere perfection; there had to be a winner and that was Xavier Foley. He received fifty thousand dollars in scholarships and by all means deserved it. The conductor of the concert was Maestro Brandon Keith Brown, who also did astonishing. In addition to all of those great musicians I also had the honor of hearing Simon Shaheen playing the oud. All together the performance was just incredible in my eyes.
I chose to do my concert critique on Eric Clapton-MTV unplugged full concert-HQ January 16, 1992 at Bray Film Studios in Windsor, England. Eric Clapton is my favorite rock n roll singer which has a mixture of genres. The concert was inside and on stage. The audience was seated up close to the stage which made the atmosphere comfortable; Eric and the band showed much warmth and connected with the crowd it wasn’t like the band was untouchable.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most historical groups that was created in Boston Massachusetts. The Boston Symphony Orchestra Andris Nelsons’ Inaugural Concert took place in September of 2014. The concert was aired on television in May of 2015. The concert was dedicated to welcoming the new director of the Boston Symphony. The concert took place in one of the most proclaimed orchestra halls simply named Boston Hall. The complete orchestra was directed by Andris Nelsons himself. Along the side of the orchestra, his wife Kristine Opolais a soprano, joined him on the stage. A young man named Jonas Kaufmann, a tenor also joined them as well.
The piece Trumpet concerto for 2 trumpets was the only concerto he created featuring trumpets. (allmusic, n.d.). When listening to this piece, having movements of optimism surrounded by one of relative questioning, it makes one feel it is representative of his view of life. Music is virtually everywhere we go, no matter if it is background noise in a coffee shop or singing along while shopping for groceries, we can find music somewhere. The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. This made me curious how this event will turn out. Walking past the ticket area and through the doors to the lobby made me feel instantly memorized at how grand it was on the inside. The play I went to see was The Music Man performed by the Mesa Encore Theatre at the Mesa Community College. I saw this performance on November 20th. The main performers in this play were Zac Bushman as Harold Hill and Lauren Koeritzer as Marian Paroo. Alongside them, a mix of both adults and children as young as 8 acted in this production. The cast and crew used appropriate clothing to match the time and place. Lights were utilized scarcely, with not much more than spotlights or front and back lights. The set was extravagant, cute, and fitting for the setting and time. Overall, this musical was vibrantly performed and left me with positive impressions regarding presentation and production.
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, I attended a musical concert. This was the first time I had ever been to a concert and did not play. The concert was not what I expected. I assumed I was going to a symphony that featured a soloist clarinet; however, upon arrival I quickly realized that my previous assumptions were false. My experience was sort of a rollercoaster. One minute I was down and almost asleep; next I was laughing; then I was up and intrigued.
Giuseppe Torelli, baroque violinist and composer, is most known for his contributions to the development of the instrumental concerto. Torelli is also noted as being the most prolific composer of baroque trumpet repertoire, with Concerto for Trumpet in D Major being one of his most renowned works that is still widely performed to this day.
I attended the Missouri Western Jazz Ensemble concert on February 3. I can thoroughly say I enjoyed the performance. For being a rather small band, less than twenty members, they certainly packed a very large sound. To me the band sounded as though it was very well rehearsed. There seemed no lack of confidence in there playing; you could tell they knew and enjoyed playing the songs. All of these factors made it very entertaining to watch this ensemble.
The jazz band I observed played a series of six different songs. Although all the songs were categorized as jazz, each song had its own special style and sound to it. The band consisted of three different players. Paul Meyers, the guitarist and composer, Andy Eulau, the bassist, and Dave Rataczak, on drums. The songs performed were entitled “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter, “Once I Loved” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Stars” by Paul Meyers, “Blues for Mel” also by Paul Meyers, “Last Night When We Were Young” by Harold Arlen, and “Samba Novo” by Luis Eca.
The Symphony Orchestra concert was preformed by The OU School of Music with Jonathan Shames as a conductor and they presented Sutton Concert Series. In addition, the Orchestra concert performed at Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall in October 12, 2015.There were like forty-one performers on the stage including the conductor using different types of instruments and and all of them were wearing a nice black clothes. The stage was a quite large with wooden floor and there were two floors for the audience with a comfortable seating. However, all the performers were on round shape and against the conductor.
Giuseppe Torelli, was an Italian violinist, teacher and composer, is considered one of the early developers of the Baroque concerto and concerto grosso. Torelli also composed a significant number of works for the trumpet during the Baroque period (1600-1750). Around 1690, one can begin to see the first works for the trumpet. He was familiar with the virtuoso trumpeter, Giovanni Pellegrino Brandi. Brandi would sometimes play with the San Petronio orchestra, of which Torelli was violin player. This acquaintance could explain Torelli’s awareness of the trumpet’s timbre, dynamic range, and expressive capabilities.
Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart born January 27, 1756, in Salzburg Austria. Mozart was an esteemed composer, widely recognized as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. Unlike other composers in musical history, he wrote in all the musical genres of his day and excelled in every one. His taste, his command of form, and his range of expression have made him seem the most universal of all composers; yet, it may also be said that his music was written to accommodate the specific tastes of particular audiences. His father, Leopold was the author of a famous violin-playing manual which was published in the year of Mozart’s birth. His mother, Anna Maria Pertly, was born of a middle-class family active in local administration; Mozart and his sister Maria Anna were the only two of their parents’ seven children to survive. Mozart was extremely talented at an early age his father considered him the miracle of Salzburg, his early life and two of his biggest masterpieces are the three topics that will be discussed in this paper.
