Nellie E. pooler Chapman made a significant impact in California, particularly on women. She served as a role model for younger women, and encouraged them to strive for their dreams, after becoming the first women to practice dentistry in California without any formal education. Chapman was born in 1847 in Norridgewock, Maine. As a young child she was very energetic, and had the desire to learn. However, at the age of 14 she got married with Allen Chapman, a 35 year old doctor. After getting married Chapman moved to Nevada City, California with her husband. Myra Maybelle Shirley also commonly known as the “Bandit Queen” was born on February 5, 1848, on a farm near Carthage, Missouri. She was one of six children, but the only daughter of her farmer parents, John and Elizabeth Shirley. When her family moved into Carthage her father became a prosperous innkeeper and slave holder. Belle attended the Carthage Female Academy, where she excelled in reading, spelling, grammar, arithmetic, manner, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and developed a love for playing the piano. She later attended another private school named Cravens, where she further nurtured her love for music. At the start of the Civil War, her parents were southern sympathizers and supporters of Confederate troops in Missouri. Myra’s parents were apparently pleased, and were even more dedicated to supporting the Confederate cause when their oldest son, John, joined a squad of bushwhackers in bloody reprisals along the Missouri-Kansas border. Later that as a result of fighting for the Confederacy with William C. Quantrill's guerillas, John was killed by Union troops in Sarcoxie, Missouri. Many believe that his influence led Belle in the decision of her life’s direction. By 1864, after Carthage was burned, the family had migrated to Scyene, Texas, near Dallas, and again established a hotel and tavern. They soon had multiple intriguing visitors.

You do not hear about many women activists, but there is an abundant amount that actually stepped fourth to alter their community for the ones they care about. Yet Dolores Huerta is a Hispanic female who strived for improving the rules in regards to the way people treat their employers. There was an abundant amount of Mexican-Americans that were being mistreated and were expected to work long periods of hours in the heat, which were farm laborers; all that pain and struggle to receive barely enough to support your family off of. She knew it would take various extents of struggle and sacrifice to reach the goal of altering the union workforce regulations. Margaret Floy Washburn was a role model and highly respected figure to many women. Washburn was born in 1871 in Harlem, New York City to Elizabeth Floy Washburn and Reverend Francis. Margaret Floy Washburn was an only child, and she explained the "blessed privilege of an only child to be undisturbed when at leisure". She started her academic learning at the age of seven, but knew how to read and write far before. At the age of eleven she attended public school for the first time, and by the age of fifteen, she graduated high school.
Elizabeth Jane Cochran was born on May 5, 1864 in Cochran Mills, Pennsylvania. She was the thirteenth child of her family and considered the most rebellious of the family. When Nellie was just six years old her father abruptly died, leaving her mother to raise fifteen children. (Around the World in 72 Days). The death of her father was a terrible financial blow to the family because her father left no will to protect the family's interests. A year after the death the family was forced to auction off the mansion and move to a more modest home. Nellie helped her mother take care of the other children, but still they came into very hard times. (Around the World in 72 Days). Elizabeth's mother desperately sought financial security so she remarried. She entered a very disastrous marriage to an abusive man. He often beat Elizabeth and her mother. Soon after the marriage began she sued for divorce and Elizabeth testified at the trial. "My stepfather has been generally drunk since he married my mother, When drunk he is very cross and cross when sober." (Around the World in 72 Days). Elizabeth soon sought an independent life and wanted a way to support her mother. She started attending the Indiana Normal School to become a teacher. While attending school Elizabeth decided to add an e' to her last name for sophistication. (Nellie Bly, Wikipedia). After one semester of schooling Elizabeth had to drop out because she didn't have enough money to continue schooling. Elizabeth then moved back to Pittsburgh with her mother. She stayed there for the next seven years but had a difficult time finding full-time work because there were only low paid jobs available to women at that time. (Nellie Bly, USA History).
Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. They also say that at the end of the day they feel accomplished in knowing that they helped improved their patient’s health, even if only in the slightest way (“Interview with a Professional”).
Last but not least, in discussing WWI individual major contributors you have to mention Francis Pegahmagbow or better known as “Peggy” by his fellow soldiers. He was arguably one of the most decorated soldiers in the entire war. Life wasn’t easy for this Ojibwa soldier though, as he had to overcome fierce adversity throughout his life from his childhood, to fighting in WWI. Peggy was an Ojibwa, part of the First Nations group in Canada. He was born in 1889 on the Parry Island Indian Reserve, near Parry Sound, Ontario. He experienced hardships early on in his life, as when he was just 3 his father died and his mother abandoned him. Wells was born in 1862 in Mississippi . She was sixteen when her parents were killed in a yellow fever epidemic, leaving her and her siblings to fend for themselves. To take care of the siblings she loved she got a job as a teacher and then as a journalist. In 1889 she purchased a part of an African American newspaper called the Free Speech. She was driven out of Memphis, TN in 1892 after writing an editorial about white men who were quick to accuse black men of rape. She moved to Chicago and in 1895 she married Frederick Barnett who was also a journalist and activist. She was considered a “race woman”. Meaning that she was more concerned with the betterment of the African American race than integration with whites. Wells was concerned for her people, especially when she saw evidence that many men were being killed for crimes that they did not commit. She became very vocal about it and put her life at risk to try to stop these
Elizabeth Blackwell led a very inspirational life that would influence many in the coming years. She had an extreme sense of passion for gender equality and it definitely showed through her actions over the course of her life. She embraced her father’s ideas and carried them out to the best of her abilities and was able to found her own hospital, along with schools that would begin teaching women the necessary knowledge to become physicians.
Dorothy Day was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 8, 1897. Her mother, Grace Satterlee Day was a New Yorker and her father, John Day, was from Tennessee. Dorothy had three brothers and a sister. At the age of six, John Day, her dad, had been relocated for his job and the family moved to Oakland. However, in 1906 he lost his job to the San Francisco earthquake. Unfortunately, the earthquake had destroyed the newspaper industry. At this young age, Dorothy was able to recognize how in this time of need people like her mother and her neighbors were helping out the poor and homeless during the tragedy. Those matters of kindness had really affected her and she could not forget them. On the other hand, due to the earthquake, the family moved to Chicago where they ended up living for the next twelve years of their lives.
During the 1890's Walker suffered from a scalp ailment that caused her to lose most of her hair. To solve this problem Walker experimented with homemade remedies, including those made by Annie Malone (another black woman entrepreneur) who in 1905 Walker was a sales representative for. In 1905, Walker moved to Denver and married her third husband, Charles Joseph Walker; this is where she changed her name to Madam CJ Walker. After changing her name, she founded her own business and began selling "Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower" which was a scalp conditioning and healing formula. Walker claims that the recipe to this formula came to her in a dream.
Two years later she was the first women to receive the M.D degree from an American Medical School. In 1853, with the help of friends, she opened her own dispensary in a single rented room, and over time she moved to a larger building on Bleecker Street in 1857. She had worked in clinics for two years in London and Paris. And even though she had to give up her dream of becoming a surgeon she lived her life how she wanted it.
