CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction The elderly people are highly respected and well taken care of because they are one of the foundation of any community. Although most Filipinos try to live up to this expectation, some just cannot and this is why elderly abandonment in the Philippines is happening (Utzurrum, 2015). It is unusual in the Philippine setting to see elderlies to be abandoned and neglected by their families because of sickness, weakness and dependence. This problem is very evident because there are very limited private and public institutions built for the elderly who have been abandoned and neglected. It is known as home for the aged, this institution aims to help, support and provide their needs until they die. It can only help them through their physical needs but not their emotional needs. (Wurtzel, 2014). One of the main concerns of these institutions are the emotional problems that the elderly encounters.
