Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and other social networking sites may be an angle sent from above to teenage students who are trying to keep in touch, but what are the negative effects of social media sites on teenagers. Teenagers of this day and age have constant access to social media sites through the modern day convenience Smartphones, Tablets, and wireless internet connections. However, with any positive effects there are always negative effects. Cyber bullying, influences on the teenagers’ sex choices, and the influences on the teenagers’ to smoke, are the three main negative effects of social media sites. This research was conducted to shed light on these negative effects. Also, how these negative effects influence there behaviors. Social media will have an everlasting effect on these young minds. Social media sites have many different effects on teenagers. However, social media sites provide the perfect territory for Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying victims can be attack from anywhere at any time because of social media sites. Cyberbullying is defined as electronically mediated behaviors among peers such as making fun of, telling lies, spreading rumors, threats and sharing private information or pictures without permission to do so. Cyberbullying has claimed countless lives of teenagers. The suicide of a teenager named Phoebe Prince in January of 2010 received a great deal of media attention. She was a victim of Cyberbullying, manifested on a social media site. Her classmates posted a video slandering her name. This video caused her a great deal of stress, depression, and shame. This particular social site allowed these bullies to post this video. Social media sites provide the habitat for this type of negative effect. Social media sites influence teens to become smokers, and this addiction may be a negative consequence that young teens want to stay away from. In final thoughts, there are many negative effects of social media sites. Cyberbullying, influences on teenagers’ sex choices, and the influences on teenagers’ to smoke are the main negative effects of social media sites on teenagers’ today. Although, social media sites were created to help keep in touch, these sites have taken a wrong turn. Cyber bullying has become major worldwide issues, and this needs to be stopped. Social media sites have an enormous role in teenagers’ sex choices. Smoking is constantly glorified on social media sites, but smoking can actually cause an early death.
