Have you ever wondered why many schools have more women’s athletic teams than the men do? This is due to the fact that all universities must abide by the regulations put in place by Title IX. Title IX in many ways is responsible for the growth and success of women’s collegiate athletics. Even though it has contributed to the growth of Women’s athletics has, in turn, had a negative effect on the opportunities male students have to participate in sports. In order to understand how and why Title IX has a negative effect on men’s intercollegiate athletics, it is important to understand what the act is and what it hopes to accomplish. According to Athletic Scholarships, only 32,000 women competed in intercollegiate athletics prior to Title IX and today over 150,000 women compete in intercollegiate competitions. Due to such an increase in the number of female athletes at each school, an increase of funds is crucial to the success of the programs. If schools are required to have an equal number of male and female athletes they must also ensure that the profits of the athletic program are given to each team. With that being said it is almost guaranteed that men 's programs will be cut because the school does not have enough money to support them in addition to the new women 's teams. A prime example of the cutting of men’s programs is in the sport of gymnastics. In 1980, there were nearly 80 men 's NCAA gymnastic teams. Today, fewer than 20 programs remain. (Lukas, Title IX’s Dark Legacy). The NCAA made the following statement in regards to the affect Title IX has on men’s sports, “Title IX does not require reductions in opportunities for male student-athletes. One of the purposes is to create the same opportunity and quality of treatment for both female and male student-athletes. Eliminating men sports programs is not the intent of Title IX. The intent of Title IX is to bring treatment of the disadvantaged gender up to the level of the advantaged group.” While this …show more content…

As with many things in life, running an athletic program cost a lot of money. No school can start a new program or maintain the current ones if they do not have the required amount of money to pay coaches, run facilities, and provide equipment for the players. The only way a new team can be started is if a the athletic program makes enough money to support a new men’s and women’s team. Depending on the size and popularity of the sport and school, most revenue is generated through lucrative television contracts and money given to each school from the NCAA. In 2015, the NCAA generated 912.3 million dollars in revenue, with the majority of that money coming from the television contracts. In 2012, ESPN agreed to a pay 7.3 billion dollars to televise the College Football Playoffs. With all of this money being spent on to televise the games, schools could look to sign bigger television contracts with the hopes of expanding their athletic
