The effects of social media seems miniscule compared to the real effects that they really intel. He believes that there is a strong correlation between social media usage and the degradation in the quality of performance from students in schools across the United States of America, from the grades of freshman through senior year in high school. It shortens our attention spans, diminishes our vision uses—in terms of far sided, near sided, and peripheral vision—and it’s such a major part of our culture that the majority of us fail to recognize that the very thing that society continuously does is setting them up for failure in the most excruciating ways.
As generations pass and continue to develop, and as the emphasis of technology increases upon the developing residents of the world, the original means of socialization: communication, recreation, and leisure, being altered and replaced by technology have become seen as socially acceptable, effective, useful, and applicable in these circumstances. Online Social Networks (OSNs) are becoming more prevalent to many kids. But however the more society uses these OSNs, the less attentive they are likely to be. According to a study conducted for the relationship on computers in human behavior, “the longer the attention span, the less time is spent of social networks, and vice versa” (Paul). It also touches basses on how using OSNs can lose the focus of the person(s), as they can become distant in activities from others. Is it quite contradictory that the very thing society thought bettered their lives, in hindsight, is fusing their minds into a less effective organ in their bodies, as it pulls the potential that it initially is capable containing out of it? Technology has been perceived to eventually run our society, but it was never intended to run our society in this way. Kid’s need to be educated well and they need to have the capabilities to retain the information that is being given to them so that they can be as successful as they can be in the remainder of their lives. Society needs to realize what is really happening to these children, because children are the society’s future. If the future of society is doomed, then the reigns are loosened and there is not a secure and strong force to steer it in the right direction. It is easier for a parent to hand their child an iPad rather than to teach them singlehandedly. So again I say that the blame is not necessarily the technology but rather the parents fault for allowing the technology to take ahold of a young child’s developing mind.

Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. Social media is any online website that lets you interact with other people, share photo and information and keeps you updated. In my personal opinion I think social media has made both positive and negatives impacts on today’s society .Some of the negative impacts are cyberbullying and addiction, and the positive impacts are spreading the word and increasing business sales.
Technology is so easy for the youth to access and there are many things that affect children through the use of technology. Children can misuse technology by accessing inappropriate materials, most kids today have smart phones and are able to access this so easily. Another reason children are affected by technology is that they are never taught how to properly use it, so they begin to think what they are doing is okay, when it is not, at a young age. My generation is more prone to the misuse of technology because they have grown up with it and it has been apart of their childhood. As technology becomes more developed it will be more vibrant in children’s lives and as they grow up it will become more of a part of their childhood. I did not receive a phone until I was 14 and it was not even an IPhone, but today there are children who have IPhones at the age of 8. Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.

Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. From "thintastic" blogs to suicide stories, social media has become not only a source of conversation but a gateway to harmful suggestions that many teenagers see and believe to be allowable, when in fact the situations proposed are dangerous to those who attempt them. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.
