The Need For Hunters
"Although systematic surveys were not yet underway, by all accounts at the time, waterfowl populations plunged to unprecedented lows" (Anderson 3). In the early 1900’s, the U.S. ecosystem had a problem. The national waterfowl population decreased drastically in the years previous and was scarcely found. If something or someone did not find a way to manage the waterfowl populations correctly, waterfowl might not be found in North America today. Hunters realized that if trends keep up, waterfowl might not be around for much longer. Because of seasonal hunting, fees, and hunters’ awareness, hunters play an instrumental role in wildlife management and control.
Despite what some people continue to believe, hunters play the leading role in wildlife conservation awareness. Michael Anderson and Paul Padding

The Department of Natural Resources stated in Your Hunting License Dollars at Work, "A big part of the Wildlife Section's work is helping other organizations implement habitat acquisition and management programs. This work, with groups such as Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, is critical to conservation"("Your" 1). Hunting clubs’ funding does not come from excise taxes, or license fees. Instead, hunters interested in individual clubs fund those clubs through dues and donations. Hunting clubs need hunters to be able to manage wildlife and fund wildlife projects. The DNR expressed in Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Go Hand in Hand, wildlife conservation clubs help and support conservation and restoration projects across the country ("DNR" 1). Once wildlife management projects started, species across America began to repopulate. The funding of many wildlife projects came from hunting clubs. Hunting clubs such as Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever could not have funded those projects without money given almost completely by
Duck Unlimited claims that “they’re world's leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation” (DU). Ducks Unlimited started back in 1937 during the dust bowl. This made all the water and land dry up, leading to ducks dying
Ever since 1973, when the Endangered Species Act came into being, conservationists and private landowners have been debating over whether to preserve the habitats of many endangered species found in unprotected areas (Ligon et al, 1986). Increasing levels of human development has led to the cutting of old-growth forests and construction of roads and other physical barriers to wildlife. These activities have greatly contributed to the fragmentation of wildlife habitat, which has had detrimental effects on the population structure and survivorship of the affected area’s indigenous species. One species that has been affected by habitat fragmentation is the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis), a nonmigratory bird with a home range covering most of the southeastern United States (Roise et al, 1990). Habitat fragmentation has led to the loss of genetic variability, nesting sites, and suitable population sizes to support cooperative breeding requirements. These factors have been responsible for the precipitous decline of the red-cockaded woodpecker. Because the red-cockaded woodpecker provides important ecological and economic benefits to both humans and the environment, we should strongly consider enacting a conservation plan for this species.
The question regarding conservation is very much alive today. The United States needs wildlife conservation. And the Federal Department responsible for conservation, the Department of the Interior, are under attack with President Trump's new budget plan. So it’s important to keep pushing for better laws and policies to protect conservation.
A point has to be made about hunting and outdoor life in Illinois, which is a common interest throughout Illinois. Though it may not interest everyone, the livelihood and a portion of income is g...
Scouting is the first key element of waterfowl hunting. Scouting is looking for the birds, finding their pattern, figuring out what times they fly, and determining where they fly to. Michael R Shea says, ¨Following the duck a few weeks before the
Wolves are a natural mean of controlling the number of deer, elk, and other large game in an environment. The larger populations of herbivores are a problem for farmers and ranchers. The herd's winter grounds could be the same ranchers use for their cattle. In 1983 the case of Allen Nelson, a rancher in Montana, came to the attention of the Forest Service. Nelson owned land about twenty miles north of Yellowstone National Park. During the winter, elk would eat the grass on his land that he needed to feed his cattle. After Nelson's efforts to persuade the National Park Service elk were migrating form Yellowstone National Park failed he turned to the Forest Service. The Forest Service owned land next Nelson and did not want the degradation of the grass in the forest. Partnering with the State of Montana, Nelson and the Forest Service placed radio collars on a dozen elk. After tracking the elk through the next ...

Groups like Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl Foundation keep up the population by buying wetlands from farmers or making there own wetlands from places that they buy. They also raise money to help keep ducks around in many ways. If it was not for these two groups ducks could have possibly been extinct. People will also donate millions to these groups because they know that their money that they put into duck conservation will go directly to support waterfowl hunting.
Restoration of the Bison is something that has been going on for the past two decades. As a matter of fact, several Native American tribes have come together to form the Inter Tribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) which has been set out to bring bison back onto the American plains in the midwest. Bison have an intimate relationship in the traditions and rituals of Native Americans. The importance of bison within the culture has made bringing back the bison an important issue in the preservation of wildlife. However, some of the arguments made by the ITBC show that the bison's economic value should be the main factor why they should be brought back. Yet others involved in this cause suggest that buffalo restoration could be an alternative to failing rural areas in the prairies. Opposition to this proposal comes mainly from those who reside in the affected areas. This topic does involve parties that have different interests in buffalo restoration.
Wildlife Services predator control uses many methods and some of which are under review for change. Petitions have been made and many letters to the government and the company have been sent. Actions are being taken to reform this service for the better of ecosystems, livestock, predators, and humans.
It is early in the morning with the majestic Elk bugles in the distance. The sun kisses the tops of the peaks with the most beautiful gold, and paints the clouds rose red. Men and women who enjoy the outdoors, whether it is hunting or just hiking, help make these types of moments possible. Hunting and the ecosystem is tied closely to conservation of land and animals. The articles on “Hunting and the ecosystem” written by the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department (SDGFP), and “Facts and statistics on wildlife conservation” written by Roger Holmes, director of the Fish and Wildlife, touch on how hunting is important to the environment to keep a good balance in the ecosystem.
The world is improving every second of the day. Our culture has upgraded since the time of the Native Americans. Hunting has modernized because of the advancement of technology and weaponry. Hunting has fed our families from the dawn of time. The innovation of hunting has been restructuring from the natives to modern day USA.
It’s a brisk November morning like any other day, but today isn’t any other day, today is the first day of firearm deer season. Shots are going off everywhere like world war three declared on deer. I’m wrapped in every hunting garment I own but winters cold embrace always finds its way in. My cheeks are rosy red and my breath was thick in the air. As I raise my shotgun and pull the trigger, my heart races and my hands shake. As I race after my prize, the sounds of leaves crunching beneath my feet are muffled by the ringing in my ears. I’m walking face to the ground like a hound on a trail and then my eyes caught it, my very first whitetail. I will never forget my first deer and the joy I felt sharing it with my family. Hunting is a passed down tradition for my family and friends. Throughout the world, millions of people participate in the spoils and adventure of the hunt. Hunting has been a pastime since the beginning of man. Hunting is one of those things either you like or you don’t like. It’s hard to explain the joys of hunting ,because it’s something one must experience for his self. Hunting does have laws and regulations you have to abide by. Are hunting regulations benefiting the hunter or the animal? This paper will discuss some of the regulations and laws, types of game, disadvantages of regulations, the pros of regulations, poachers, and ways to preserve wildlife and there habitat.
From the perspective of economy, ecology, and environmental conservation, hunting is very important. Hunting is necessary to protect agriculture and the environment from animal pest or overpopulation. For example, wild boars tear up many farmers land causing many problems as well with the deer population growing eating away farmer’s resources. Also with the growth of white tail deer are damaging every landscape east of the Mississippi river. Unfortunately, the harm is very overlooked, and accepted as somehow “natural”. Over the last 30 years higher dear populations have made a more negative impact due to climate change. (“Is Hunting a Good Thing?”) Hunting was legalized in 1993 to help bring overabundant wild animal populations down. The legalization
Immediately, as my dad and I was walking to the deer stand, my thoughts were that this hunt already felt like any other night hunt I had ever been on. My dad and I together chose which stand we would hunt from the choices on the board. We arrived at the box stand, which was fifteen feet tall, then we climbed in and got comfortable. In the meantime, we were looking around to find any sign of a deer. Meanwhile, as we were sitting quietly in the stand, we suddenly heard something. We could tell that the noise was something running through the trees extremely fast! Suddenly, there she was, a doe, creeping out from the bushes. At that moment, I was only able to see her head. I was getting so nervous, and I didn 't know what to do; however, my dad told me to stay calm and breathe. As she was walking into the field, stopping along the way to eat, I prepared my gun in order to shoot. My dad told me to take the shot whenever I was ready, so within the next couple of seconds I pulled the trigger. BOOM! She’s down! I had shot her; however, I knew I hit her, but she ran
