A large portion of my day, along with most people of similar ages, is almost entirely consumed by my phone. At any point, I can reach into my pocket, tap on the screen a few times, and be informed of the most important news and my friends’ social lives. My phone allows me to know current information; my phone keeps me in the loop. As Neal Gabler states in his 2011 article The Elusive Big Idea, which outlines the decline of ideas and thought due to technology, “We prefer knowing to thinking because knowing has more immediate value.” Knowledge gives us the ability to engage in conversation and the context to understand other’s points. Nowadays, the consensus is that the key indicator of intelligence is knowledge. As a result, having information on many things is valued more than possessing thought-provoking ideas. Intelligence used to be reserved for those men and women with the capacity to take knowledge and turn it into an idea or theory, but those who merely have the information claim that title. This predicament reminds me of my father. There is no denying that he is a very smart man; however, recently I have noticed the value he places on facts and knowledge. For example, he is constantly inserting himself into conversations to share small fact or tidbit about the topic. He wants people to know that he has knowledge on the topic and therefore is well-informed. The thirst for a wide range of knowledge has been brought about by the countless bytes of information available to us. Before the computer came to fruition, information and knowledge was gained through hours of research, sifting through articles and studies to find relevant information. The reason why we gathered information was different as well. Technology has rapidly furthered scientific and industrial progress, which is why its dominance in our world will likely not cease. Given that we cannot change this, people must adapt to current technology so that they can lead a successful life. The classroom is a great place for it to be implemented. Ann Woo, a writer for Samsung’s business insights program, argues that technology is advancing education as we know it. In her op-ed Technology in the Classrom is Gateway to a Brighter Future, Ann Woo explains, “through the use of technology, in a meaningful way in their classrooms, teachers are able to cater to specific learning styles, engage students both in and out of the classroom, and encourage an increased level of student involvement and collaboration.” Not only does technology give students the opportunity for a more immersive learning experience, but it provides students with practice using the different pieces of equipment. My generation was lucky enough to experience having new technology in the classroom. I can’t imagine not having computer programs such as Type to Learn or Funbrain which made learning boring topics fun and
