Natural selection determined the biological modifications essential for a species to increase its survival rate. This also could explain the loss of certain species, which may have been unable to survive in the changing ecosystem. These species may have died off, as the rise of other predators, or of changes in the food supply. Over time the species adopted, or learned new biological traits to improve its existence.
