In my company, we don’t have project managers, but our general managers are required to have several qualities discussed in the Spotlight Corporation case study. The first competency that is highly regarded in management is having strong interpersonal skills. Each manager has 8-15 people reporting to them. First of all, communication is key within the company. Our managers are expected to relay information regarding process changes, areas of focus and growth and legal changes. If this information is not conveyed to the team correctly and so everyone understands and within a timely manner, we won’t be in compliance with the department of insurance. Managers are also required to have strong team building skills. Right now, the company is focused on retention and they’ve learned that if teams are managed well and teams are comfortable with one another, people are less likely to leave the company.

We work with customers all day long and managers will have the final say on if we can make concessions in order to keep a customer happy. While it’s important to stick to policy, it’s also important as a manager to know when it’s a better business decision to adapt in situations. Just like in the Spotlight Corporation case study, managers have to take profit and cost into account (Patanakul & Milosevic, 2010)
