Throughout the course of history, the connection between nationalism and sport has been widely apparent. The level of priority and attention placed on international sporting events, such as the Olympics, truly shows how the relationship between nationalism and sport is both highly regarded by each nation around the world, as well as highly regarded by the people belonging to each nation. As a result of this overall importance placed on nationalism within the realm of sport, nationalist ideals are often utilized in support or promotion of certain sports teams. As the Blue Jays entered the MLB playoffs in October of 2016, the team released a video on their club website introducing this new campaign, which quickly was shared by Blue Jays fans around the world, subsequently implementing “Come Together” as the official motto for the Toronto Blue Jays within the playoffs. The video presented high levels of nationalist themed content through both its visual and audio components. For instance, the video begins by showing Blue Jays flags being proudly flown in a variety of landscapes from misty coastlines to farmland in the prairies, symbolizing outright support for the baseball team throughout various communities across the nation. Additionally, the video also features an extremely large Canadian flag being held by hundreds of people at a Blue Jays home game, once again associating the team to the theme of nationalism. Furthermore, the commentary included in this promotional video compliments the nationalist themed scenes described above, as the narrator urges for fans to “Come Together, not just for our city, but for our country”, refers to the Blue Jays as “one team, 35 million strong”, as well as ensures the inclusion of both official languages of Canada by ending the video by stating “please and merci”. Evidently, nationalist themed content within this promotional video created by the Blue Jays organization is clearly apparent. The second example of the Blue Jays organization incorporating nationalist ideals into their promotional strategies is evident when looking at the special celebrations carried out by the organization on Canada Day.
