American Hero
An American Hero is just an average person who is not tied into any group, society or family, they are classified as a loner. An American Hero is someone who seeks justice and does what is necessary to obtain justice. Nathaniel Bumppo is the hero of the movie Last of the Mohicans and is the first American Hero. The American Hero is derived from the ideas of the Greek Tragic Hero. A Greek Tragic Hero is the protagonist of the story who is a mixture of good and evil, this character contains a “tragic flaw” known as hamartia. A Greek Hero causes their own upbringing and their own downfall and they always end in misery. One characteristic of an American Hero that Nathaniel relates to is that he is a loner. He does not belong to any particular group of people or society. Nathaniel seeks justice above all things and always puts the mass of people first to save them. Nathaniel also possesses traits of a hero by having a damsel in distress, in Last of the Mohicans Nathaniel’s damsel in distress is Cora Munro. He does anything to make sure she is safe and protects her at all costs. As most heroes do, Nathaniel has a sidekick, Major Duncan Heyward. Heyward assists Nathaniel in obtaining justice and protecting Cora. For example , in the end of the movie the Hurons want to kill Cora as revenge for the death of Magua’s children and Nathaniel proposes that they take him rather than Cora but Heyward offers up himself , sacrificing himself to protect Cora by giving her a better chance of surviving with Nathaniel. As Heyward is being burned alive , Nathaniel uses his super power, which is to make accurate shots using a rifle, to save Heyward by shooting and killing him to put him out of his misery. Aside their differences, they both acted with honor to achieve justice. Nathaniel saves his mass of people along with Cora, his damsel in distress and Paul saves his mass of people. Both put others before themselves and without hesitation did what was necessary to save others, even if it meant sacrificing themselves too. An American Hero usually has a superpower, in Nathaniel’s case it was his long rifle and shooting accuracy and in Paul’s case it was not only his firefighting gear but his incredible bravery. They use their superpowers to assist in the pursuit of justice. The American Hero always defeats the evil force , Nathaniel defeats the Hurons and Paul defeats the terrorists. An American Hero is someone who protects, saves and sacrifices himself for the good of others and Nathaniel Bumppo and Paul Tegtmeier fit under that description
All of the qualities shown in these men are important in showing heroism. Heroism is having qualities that highlight someone's unique and noble abilities. Both of these men portray a massive amount of heroism in their stories.
Christopher McCandless is the ideal tragic hero because he had everything in the world but he gave it up to go on a two year trip into the wild and through his own actions he paid the ultimate price. McCandless had a goal to achieve in the wilderness but as Aristotle said “The tragic hero's powerful wish to achieve some goal inevitably encounters limits, usually those of human frailty.(Aristotle #2)”Although McCandless met his fate at the end of his journey the fact that he attempted this grand adventure makes him a hero rather than an imbecile.

Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Christopher Reeve once said, “ A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” The difference between a hero and an average person is that, one will give up and the other will keep fighting. Heroes are willing to sacrifice themselves for others, they are brave when other others cower, and do not run away from the terror.
What is a tragic hero? The most well known definition of a tragic hero comes from the great philosopher, Aristotle. When depicting a tragic hero, Aristotle states "The change in the hero's fortunes be not from misery to happiness, but on the contrary, from happiness to misery, and the cause of it must not lie in any depravity but in some great error on his part." In addition, he explains the four essential qualities that a tragic hero should possess, which are goodness, appropriateness, lifelike, and consistency. All of these necessities help to classify the character of John Proctor in Arthur Miller's The Crucible as the tragic hero of the play. Not only does he unfortunately fall to desolation, but also his character captures the sympathy and pity from the audience or readers. Proctor's downfall in the play is initiated by a human flaw, which to a great extent qualifies him to be the tragic hero.
In Grant Wiggin’s speech about heroes, Jefferson displays many of the qualities that, according to Grant, a hero must possess. Grant himself, for all the good he does Jefferson, is not a hero, following his own formula. However, we cannot simply say that one is a hero and the other is not. In comics and fairy tales, the divisions between heroes and average people might be clear, but in real life, the lines are blurred.
A typical hero may be described as a superhuman with great, superpowers. Although, my hero can swim, run, and fly, without a cape. A tragic hero can be defined as literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. A well known novel in American Literature is The Great Gatsby which displays an example of a tragic hero. The author of the book, F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrayed an example of a tragic hero through the main character of the novel named Jay Gatsby. In the book Gatsby tries to accomplish the American Dream by gaining wealth and doing everything in his power to be with the love his life Daisy Buchanan. His whimsical ways granted him wealth and allowed him to be in the arms of his lover Daisy but, it also leads him to death. Jay Gatsby can be considered a tragic hero because he has a tragic flaw and because his misfortune was not wholly deserved.

A tragic heros is someone who faces adversity and has courage and they have similar characteristics throughout different literature. A hero often times experience a downfall, but confronts the situation in a way that causes them to be given the title of a tragic hero. Aristotle once stated about tragic heroes and recited “A man doesn’t become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall.” Aristotle also came up with six characteristics that all tragic heroes have. Romeo is a prime example of a tragic hero by the quick judgements he makes due to his love for Juliet. A tragic hero can be defined by several different factors; the hero usually has a major flaw that prevents him from seeing the truth that lies in front of him, which contributes to the character’s peripeteia due to mistaken judgement. This mistake then leads to achieving anagnorisis, usually at the end of the play, but is too late to change anything, and results in death.
These heroes are not the equivalents to the Lone Ranger or Superman; they might even flee instead of fight a dangerous situation. However, when they do fight, they fight with flesh and bone. They fight with emotions and tears. They fight with anger and fears. They fight with confusion. They fight for their country. They fight to avoid the shame and embarrassment. They fight because of obligations to the family, to the country, and to themselves. The heroes that come to mind through these descriptions are the ones fighting in uniforms.
