After frying some fresh venison to go with the leftovers from the night before and everyone ate their fill, Charity cleaned up her cooking area and then told the children that she was going to walk into town to see if she could trade some of the fresh meat, for some flour, lard, and beans. She took the back-strap, which was the tenderest part of the deer, and the two hind-leg-quarters, hoping they would be enough to get the supplies that she needed in order to keep her children fed. To help carry the meat, she took Charles with her, leaving Uriah and John to watch the girls and Aaron. It was a long, hard walk carrying the fresh meat, which was heavy. When they finally made it to town, she didn’t waste any time, she went straight to the mercantile. The proprietors name was Benjamin Butler. He was a kindly man, with a warm, friendly smile. In a wave, they all ran to meet them. Little Aaron, trying hard to keep up with his siblings, fell and bumped his nose in the dirt.
