On September 2nd, the Netflix series Narcos had its second season premiere. As a partnership between Netflix and Spanish-language network Telemundo, Narcos was created and executive produced by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro. The sound crew set out to capture realistic Columbian dialects and period sound effects because the show is set in 1992 Columbia. While attempting to maintaining authentic Colombian Spanish dialects for some of the non-Colombian actors, the showrunners emphasized that the dialogue and group ADR should be as representative and authentic as possible. In terms of sound effects, the sound crew went after intense realism and avoided action-movie sound troupes, like cut sweeteners. In the context of dialogue, they crew would have the scenes built with both boom and iso mics, and had very little noise-reduction processing or work done in the editorial process. This gave the effect of track to be very realistic. Due to the dynamic sections of the show being so sound heavy, they were very selective in their soundtrack; it was comprised of 16 production tracks, eight loop group tracks, eight principal ADR tracks, and between six and eight tracks of X and PFX audio from sound editorial. This made the music more significant and effective to the audience. I had many questions that are unanswered; I do not know exactly what each job that they listed in the article is and what it entails. However, it did inform me on how hard the crew worked on Narcos. It did inspire me to go learn more about audio jobs and what each job does; after all, I could be doing one of those jobs someday. I would like to expound my knowledge of the audio industry.
