In “Young Goodman Brown,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses mystery and suspense to get the attention from the reader. Hawthorne leads us into thinking about what all of this witchcraft, mystery, and the way the characters are portrayed. We must not look at this as just a suspenseful story but also see the many forms of symbolism that Hawthorne uses. The author shows that a strong faith is the greatest thing of a man or woman, and when that faith is ruined, the effects of this can cause one to be filled with doubt and crazy ness towards the rest of the world. Brown does show he has a strong faith before he enters the forest and sometimes during his journey to the Black forest. Hawthorne uses the name of Brown’s wife, Faith, as a symbol of Brown’s own faith throughout the story. Brown’s strong faith can be seen through his wife: “And Faith, as the wife was aptly named, thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap”.
