My Writing Reflection

In the beginning of the semester I found writing a sizable essay in a coherent manner challenging. I previously wrote only formulaically, usually in preparation for timed examinations. Throughout the semester I have found myself writing coherently with less effort than I previously thought was possible. Near completion of this semester, I could transition from one paragraph to the next with ease, while my paragraph transitions in the beginning of the semester were incoherent and choppy. At times the overarching structure of my writing is confusing, and I will continue advancing my ability structural ability. For my first essay I did a rhetorical analysis of William Faulkner Nobel Prize acceptance speech. My second was a visual analyses of a music video, Islands by the XX. And my last essay was a comparative analysis of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and A Rose for Emily. I found the fist essay to be very challenging; it had some rough edges that I struggled to remove. The concept of literary analysis was somewhat foreign to me: It is very different from the persuasive essays I was taught to write in high school. I enjoyed writing the second essay because I got a chance to analyze media; this essay seemed to write itself. I had a hard time writing what was being depicted in the video in a simplistic, easy to follow manner, but overall I though this essay was strong. The final last major essay was the hardest to write. In a manner that supported sound thesis, I had to decide what aspects of each literary work I was going to analyze and through what facets I would do so. In the beginning of the semester I would not have known where to start on this essay. There are aspects of this essay I could have written in a better way, but I believe I showed growth considering this was the most challenging essay to
