Every time when I have to do a writing assignment I have to go through the similar experience. If I have to make a list with all of my writing problems, the number one will be “Articles” For an ESL student, it is really difficult to understand when and what article should be used. Thus, articles “a” and “the” look tricky for me. Another problem for me is prepositions. Many times I am using “about” instead of “for”, and it does not make sense for me why “wishing for a new bike” is correct and “wishing about a new bike” is wrong. Using the correct verb tense is another issue for me. A lot of times I use simple verb tenses, and I am struggling with perfect verb tenses. In Plato’s “The Republic,” Socrates argues that education is key in creating a just state and a just individual. Socrates poses different views on the amount of education an individual needs in order to be an auxiliary, guardian, or philosopher-king. However, Socrates believes that the philosopher-kings’ education makes them more fit to rule as a just individual. While I agree with Socrates about the role that education should play, I do not agree that the education of the philosopher’s make better rulers than any other individual./
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. I have never thought that essay writing could be so hard and stressful. However, when I started my first ESL course, which was ESL 263, I was proven wrong. First of all, I didn’t know anything about essay writing. That class was my first experience in English writing. I wanted to drop the class so many times. Essay writing was just so stressful. I remember our instructor telling us that ESL 263 is an easy class compared to ESL 273. Of course that freaked me out. I started questioning myself if I really want to continue studying. Obviously, I kept studying. Nonetheless, I wanted to drop ESL 273 also. I’m glad I stayed in this class because I learned a lot and I can see improvements in my writing.
