A total reliance on God requires complete submission to His will. I often find myself asking questions of God. Why is this happening? What do you want for me to learn in this? Where do you want me? Following the goodness of His answers led me to many places, one of which was Bethel. One answer I found brought me to Haiti. I surrendered my life to Christ at five years old. From that moment on, I know I was to follow His will and that He had his good plans for my life. Haiti was one of those plans. I experienced a tug on my heart in regards to missions and God followed through on that call with a trip to Haiti. He continued His work in me and I was consistently brought back to a bible study I had lead while in Haiti. With one day's notice and a migraine I wrote the lesson God had laid upon my heart to share with the girls who would come. The woman who ran the school warned that these girls are often hard to reach and there me be a small turnout. When the bible study was set to begin I was sitting with my translator and three girls. With some patience God revealed His great plan. Within half an hour I was teaching to quite the large group. They were interactive as well as we sand songs both in English and Creole as well as memorized the key verse from the lesson. There was one girl whom I spoke to afterwards whom I discovered was 15 and in the fifth grade. I was also 15 but was a sophomore in high school. In that moment God opened my eyes to the importance of the early years of education and the access to it. At dinner that night, I was given the headcount of 76, the largest number they had ever had. God’s goodness lead me to Haiti,those girls, and to a better understanding of God’s call.
The next question that I asked was, what do I do with that? Bethel provided me with an answer. While looking into further education options, I ended up looking at the list of Bethel’s majors and minors. As I skimmed the list I noticed Elementary Education. This was not a surprise to me as most , if not all schools offer this. As I continued I noticed the Missional Ministries
There is so much mystified confusion surrounding the will of God in today’s society. It is evident in the ways that people use the term that views about it differ widely; there is even contradiction in two things the same person might say. It is because of the recommendation of my pastor and others that I decided to read The Will of God, written by Leslie D. Weatherhead.
A time comes in everybody's life where they need to be "saved." When this happens a spiritual bond is formed with in that individual. In Langston Hughes' essay, "Salvation," that bond is broken because Langston wasn't saved. It is because Langston turned to Jesus, and in his eyes Jesus wasn't there. This creating a conflict within himself and the members of the church, with the end result being Langston's faith being destroyed.
The Haitian Revolution makes for the most fascinating revolt in history. The black race, after many years of oppression, overcame the dominant white race, without the assistance of guns, and other technological warfare at that time. In its own words, the author states that the book makes clear that the roots of the revolution of Haiti consist of movements involving the "wisdom and common sense of the masses". Hordes of blacks reached a consensus that human sacrifice is a small price to pay for freedom. In the view of Carolyn E. Fick, no organization or political entity involved can be attributed as much credit than the masses for the popular revolution that unseated one of the longest dictatorships of mankind.
Haiti, a small island near the Caribbean was stumbled upon by Christopher Columbus in December of 1492 he referred to the island as “La Isla Espanola” (History of Haiti). However, Arawak Indians who called the island “Hayti” inhabited the Island. In the early years of Haiti the Spanish, Britain, and France were fighting for it for new territory. Towards the 17th century, the native Indians became extinct and the French ruled the Island.
Haitian culture is a mixed native Indians, African slaves, and French and Spaniard settlers. After Haiti gained its independence there was much political and economical turmoil. When Haitian immigrated to the United States, many became doctors, teachers, social workers, and professionals. Although there was Haitian success stories there are more stories of failure and hopelessness because of the worry of being deported and the racism that they encounter. Through the field of social work would like to help these people get established in this country and as a Christian I would love to give them hope.
From the beautiful mountain ranges to the two major lakes, Lake Azeul and Lake Miragoane with nothing but dirt roads in between. Haiti’s coastline is the second longest in the Caribbean and its also the size of Maryland (“Haiti 2”). Haiti dominates one-third of the island Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic (“Haiti 2”). The world should appreciate Haiti because of their wonderful literature, culture and impact on the world.
Haiti is a very interesting country, people always want to visit places like Florida where it’s tropical. Well, if you want to visit a really tropical place you should go to Haiti. I promise you it doesn’t matter why you are going there: vacation, mission trip, or anything. You won’t regret it. I’m going to tell you more about Haiti, and how amazing it can be.
The effects caused by earthquakes are devastating. They cause loss of human life and have effects on infrastructure and economy. Earthquakes can happen at any time anywhere. In January 12, 2010 an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.0 hit the nation of Haiti. An estimation of 316,000 people were killed, and more than 1.3 million Haitians were left homeless (Earthquake Information for 2010). Haiti was in a terrified chaos. After the earthquake, families were separated because many of the members were killed. Homes, schools, and hospitals were demolished. People lost their most valuable belongings. It will take time for the country to recover from this terrible disaster. The long damages are economic issues, health-state, and environmental issues that effect in the beautiful island of Haiti.
I was born and lived in Haiti for eight years of my life. The poverty there is so high that it has been labeled the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. That is where I grew up. People had homes, but they could often be blown away by strong winds. Our materials for building homes was of very poor quality and limited. We had so little money that I often saw kids and their families sleeping on the side of every street corner. I was one of the most fortunate kids. I remember sleeping on a dirt floor in my grandmother’s little hay house when I was around six years old. At least I had a home. Langston Hughes uses poetic elements to express the reader his feelings towards America. Langston Hughes is very upset that America is not what it promised to be. Living in America, he never saw America to be the land of the free, what it promised to be. Instead, he saw America to be cruel to him and now wants to change America to be the country of the free he thought it was. He expresses all his emotion about America, in his poem, Let America Be America Again, by using connotative diction, repetition, narrative tone and organization; poetic elements.
I looked back on my life and realized that all my hopes and dreams, everything that I wanted to be and do, I had tossed it away. I had forgotten who my grandparents had raised me to be. They wanted the best for me and now I want the best for my newborn son. I had decided right then and there that I needed to change my ways. I had to change who I let into my life and who I let influence me. It is funny how God works in mysterious ways. Once I decided to better myself for me and my son, I met my future husband. It’s funny because our lives have passed our whole entire lives and yet we never knew one another. We both attended Fort Worth Christian School at the same time. Our families attended all the same events and venues at the same time. Yet, had I never made the decision to move back in with my mother I never would have met him. Twelve years later we are happily married with three wonderful boys. I have spent the last twelve years taking care of our children and building a nurturing, Christian home for our family. If I were able to travel to anywhere in this world without worrying about expenses, I would travel to New Orleans; a Louisiana city that is located on the Mississippi River and is in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans has a number of things to provide as to why I would travel there, but I only picked my main three that I mostly want to do. In February of my eighth grade year, a dear friend of mine passed away in a tragic car accident. He was the first friend I made in youth group and his death definitely took a toll on the church. Shortly after, my father stepped down from his position as pastor, claiming to be mentally unstable to lead a church. A few weeks later my mother served him with divorce papers. Within a matter of months, life changed drastically. I had experienced the loss of a friend and the loss of a complete family and was left with brokenness. I stood in the town square of the small village. Like any other normal day, people were going about their day-to-day business. Old men sat on a wooden bench beneath a large tree and predicted this year’s crop. Women shared town gossip as they shopped for groceries, and children sucked on lollipops while they played along the cobblestone streets. However, unlike any other day, the whole crowd had stopped in unison and darted their eyes in my direction, their full attention on me. I heard hushed whispers as I passed by the crowd, “Americano!” “Oh mio Dio, guarda com’è alto!” I lowered my head as I thought to myself, “What the hell am I doing here? I’m in a country where I don’t know the language or the culture, and I have another nine and a half months until I go home!” I didn’t know it then, but those nine and a half months that lay in front of me would be the experience that would challenge my views and goals and help shape the person I am today.
