My Optometrist Experience

They blew air in my eye, blinded me with their lights, and turned me into a robot.

Well, that’s how my first experience at the optometrist felt at six years old. Before the real eye exam began, and the pre examinations were taking place, my initial impression was that I despised this place and would put in all my efforts not to return. To any other kid, this may have been their same experience, and the story ended there. However, for me, this seemingly terrible experience turned out to be a life changing one. It was at the end of that visit that I realized this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It has always been my greatest interest and passion to help others, it really is a big part of who I am. And here I realized there’s …show more content…

Participating in various community service events, medical related or not, that have eminently helped me grow as a person, and learn more about people and the community. As a matter of fact, I helped my friend in creating the MSA (Muslim student association) club at our school, to allow us to compete with other participating schools in the district, and the state, and were successful in our first year of participation. Moreover, I have indulged in advanced science classes such as AP biology, AP psychology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology, following the path of the health science academy. The most interesting of these classes being CNA; a class that gives students the opportunity to shadow hospital doctors and nurses, then visit and help out at a nursing home. As I mentioned before, I take part in extracurricular clubs at my school, but I do more than just school clubs. My favorite, and most rewarding service I do, is working to assist and feed Syrian refugees. I volunteer for an organization named ADC (anti discriminatory committee), and have helped set up and run many food drives for refugees, who don’t have the privilege of having an adequate meal everyday. It is a beautiful thing to see the smile on their faces, knowing they feel welcome and cared for. Furthermore, I spend two days a week tutoring refugee children through SARA (Syrian American Refugee Aid). A very beneficial opportunity for these children to be set on the right path for their future, and hopefully have a positive impact on their generation, and generations to come. I plan to continue volunteering for these organizations and hopefully expanding even further and find more ways to help others and improve lives. Helping them means a lot to me, as they come from the same region I’m from, the Middle East.

I believe this passion for helping others is truly what drives me to pursue my goal of a medical career. So long as my passion for helping others is with me, my determination to pursue this dream will remain, and only grow stronger. There is so much to improve, so many things to discover, and countless subjects to research in the medical field, and I hope to have a great impact
