Twelve days, five countries, one unforgettable excursion. My junior year of high school, I took a trip to Central Europe. While on that trip I visited Auschwitz, Poland, a murky and mournful city. The place where two of the major concentration camps resided when Nazi’s forcefully took away thousands of innocent lives. Going to Auschwitz to visit the concentration camps was truly an incredible experience that I will never forget. I became more familiarized with the subject, saw heartbreaking photographs and personal items that belonged to the victims, and experienced strong emotions I had never perceived before. Many people don’t have the capability to travel and explore the wonders of the world. I was fortunate enough receive the opportunity to visit a place that has marked history forever. On March 22nd 2016, I remember getting off the bus and heading toward the first and main camp, Auschwitz I. It was a bright and sunny day, which felt wrong. It was also the most emotional. It was full of chambers and rubble from already destroyed chambers, but there was also a railroad. These railroad tracks led the way to the unexpected and inexplicable death of thousands of humans. I walked toward it, I felt my stomach sinking in, along with a sudden weight falling on my shoulders as I kneeled down by the train tracks and just cried. My tears were unstoppable. I imagined what it felt like to leave your family at that very spot and never see them again. I stayed there for a few minutes, trying to regain composure again, but it was challenging because I had never felt such a rush of wistful emotions before. It was like I burst out all the bottled up feelings I had inside of me. I later left and headed back to the bus, spoke to no one, closed my eyes, and relieved that whole day over and over again until we arrived at the hotel. It was an immensely emotional, lengthy
