Mario Puzo once said, “The strength of a family like the strength of an army is in its loyalty to each other”. Every experience has a lesson, that lesson alters us in way unimaginable. During my undergraduate work I dedicated myself to taking rigorous coursework, but what truly guided my actions were my responsibilities to my family. During my final two and half years of college my Uncle Al was diagnosed with Dementia, and my Grandmother Willaleen was diagnosed with breast cancer. My course work coupled with my family responsibilities taught me core values regarding time management, empathy, selflessness, and the importance of a positive attitude no matter what the situation. My Grandma Willaleen was one of the amazing women to walk this earth; she had a heart of gold, willing to do whatever it took to help others. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1920’s she witnessed the worst, as well as the best and yet she rarely had a negative word to say about anyone or anything. In my grandmother’s eyes education was of the utmost importance; I was to be her first grandchild to graduate college and I just knew that she would be there. The advisors at Metropolitan State University set my graduation date back at minimum a year after my transfer. After Grandma Willaleen’s diagnosis I was determined that my grandmother would witness my commencement, and therefore would only be deterred one semester. At 94 and standing at 4’11 my grandmother was a fighter, and strong as nails. Even during my worst times I still remember joyous memories; the pure joy on my grandmother’s face when we would venture out for lunch at Red Lobster after her doctor’s appointments, or the hysterical laughs my uncle would fall into when we would play around him and sneak him chocolates. Those moments are precious in my memory. My transcripts showplace my drive to always do my best, and my personal statement shows the influence my family is in my life; with the skills that I have acquired through my family responsibilities and rigorous coursework I believe I am excellent candidate for the prestigious and rigorous course work of the University of Chicago Law
