Over the course of my eighteen years, I have learned the importance of goal setting, despite if I may have decided to alter a few of them. I have learned that goals are the stepping stones to the future and that future success requires thorough preparation. I began setting goals while I was in primary school which eventually unfolded into a reality as I began my years as a high school student. My years in high school has fostered my short and long term goals as I embark on my journey as a medicine candidate. I currently have four short term goals that I am striving and working diligently towards. I intend on attaining these goals within the next five years. My next short term goal is to acquire an internship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It would be such a delight to witness my long sought after dream of having the opportunity of a lifetime to be in the presence of a surgeon performing an open heart surgery. This has fascinated me ever since I was a child, dreaming of the day when I could officially call myself Dr. Carter. In addition, my third short term goal is to do phenomenal in college with an eligibility to graduate with honors. I anticipate that college will challenge me to my greatest abilities and I am currently preparing for it by taking advantage of the opportunity to take dual enrollment and advanced placement courses during my high school career. Of course, I want some of the same things that my peers want such as, a life full of happiness, being healthy, and the “American Dream.” My “American Dream” is far beyond the richest and wealth, I mean sure it would be nice to build an empire to preserve family wealth for generations to come. However, I want to live a long life alongside my husband as we watch our children succeed at their endeavors. On the other hand, I have more career-oriented goals as well. I want to earn my medical degree and become a Pediatric Surgeon. I want to spend my years at St. Jude Children’s Hospital conducting research to find a cure for congenital heart disease in children and adults. I ensure that I will discover a cure due to all of the technological advances that will continue to emerge as the nation progresses. I want to mentor children who aspire to be Pediatric Surgeons so I can lead them in the most appropriate direction to guarantee them success in medicine since I did not have that growing up as a kid. As a kid, I always knew that I wanted to be a surgeon.
