There are times in my future professional career as a social worker; I will experience personal values or ethics conflicts with clients. Being able to realize my own personal ethics or values, understanding difficulties that may arise as I work with the client, and situations that would cause me to question being able to be objective and professional in working with the client, will help me later on in my profession. One situation that may arise in my future professional career that would lead to me experiencing personal ethics or values conflicts would be working with an HIV+ male who admits to not having “safe sex” because he doesn’t like the way condoms feel.

While working with a client that refuses to have “safe sex” due to the way condoms feels while being HIV positive, I would be in the wrong if I said it would not affect me in some way while working with the client. I would be able to see past my personal values and be able to professionally work with the client. I would turn to the Code of Ethics and realize I can’t throw my values on my client. The client came in seeking help and wanting to change his ways to have a different lifestyle, seeing the determination in the client to have “safe sex” and realizing that each individual has different behaviors they have picked up due to different beliefs. My Church of Christ beliefs are values I cherish deeply, I also am a Christian that knows we are all sinners. We all are going to struggle with different sins and no one sin is greater then another. The client is struggling with an issue that he can overcome with the right guidance and support. Helping the client have a healthier lifestyle would be my main purpose and would be able to be done with putting my values aside to help his health and his partner’s
