When I was a little girl, one of my favorite movies that my father and I would watch together was, “Ferngully The Last Rainforest”. That movie was so captivating that it kindled my passion for the planet and brought forth my “save the rainforest” mentality.
All my life, I always had an affinity for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. I felt I needed to play a role in the prosperity of the environment. In college, I studied graphic design so I can convey messages to others through aesthetics. Towards the end of my college career, I realized I want to be substantive in the messages I communicate. I know that I cannot fix the entire world, but if I can make a quantitative change, it would make all the difference to me.
After I finished

Direct and indirect pressures from society create limitations in creativity and create a place of separation from human and non-human and place the focus on self-satisfaction rather than focus on altruism. I want to guide people on ways to live alongside nature instead of above it using the power of reciprocity as an aid. My future goals include exploring business possibilities using permaculture, bringing my charity project to fruition by teaching others how to live off of the land, and providing educational and volunteer opportunities for lower class families and schools. As a major key to success, I want to keep the aspects of the environment and sustainability in mind when starting any charity project. Having knowledge about various societies and cultures will help solve future conflicts and aid in properly connecting to different …show more content…
In a field like environmental leadership, you cannot use traditional education when you are working towards changing the tradition itself. Learning about building human-nature relationships as well as environmental justice and conflict resolution involves being more mindful about yourself and the world around you. Personally, I feel the need to train myself to connect with nature on a deeper level because in order to fully listen to nature, I feel that I would need to build a connection first. Using experiential academic context is beneficial in way that shows you how you would apply all that you have learned in a real world setting. I feel like this method gives me chances to problem solve using creativity and new perspectives to what I have learned. I am passionate about playing an integral role in raising awareness about environmental destruction and aid in changing the paradigm. The criteria and foundation that the Masters of Environmental Leaders is built on is the ideal program that would take me on the right
The message of the film is to describe the Waorani lifestyle and how the rainforest is critical to their maintaining their nomadic lifestyle that has been a part of their culture for centuries. Wade Davis’ article, Among the Waorani, provides much of the content brought to
Environmental issues in Haiti have contributed to the country’s difficulties with poverty, quality of life, and economic instability. Due to unfortunate natural disasters, the topic of sustainability has been pushed aside in order to prioritize the issues of hunger, and homelessness. Pollution is becoming increasingly prominent due to the rise in deforestation, and the non-existence of proper sewage systems. Possible solutions include the improvement of sewer systems, and to encourage the use of recycled building materials. To fund the sewage restoration, the United Nations should be urged to become involved in the restoration of the sewers. Other relief effort groups can contribute by discouraging deforestation. Service learning for environmental
Everybody knows that to have a good social life one needs to have good ethics, but what about using those ethics in the natural environment. Many people tend to say that they are well-educated, with a high use of ethics, but it seems useless in the real world. Society needs to start to worry about the environment and not only about what one wants or need. Aldo Leopold describe how ethics in an ecological and philosophical view today needs to changed to have a good use of them. Leopold was one of the founders of the Wilderness society. At the same time, he initiated the first Forest Wilderness Area in the United States. This two are just some of the societies and jobs in which he was involved that have to do with the natural environment. During
“These films have taught us vicariously about having a fundamental respect for nature. Some of them […] inspired conservation awareness and laid the emotional groundwork for environmental activism” (Cohen 9). Although these aspects of the films that Disney has made are true, there is still a lot of work to be done before all of the films made with this same goal can be considered accurate. This includes having the correct and accurate environmental aspects within Disney cartoons and movies in the future. In previous movies, Disney animation has almost gone to the point of over-doing animated characters, including having flowers and trees talk. The consequence of anthropomorphism is that doing this has led some people to believe that it makes the environmental aspect of the characters hard to understand. Viewers of these cartoons perceive the environment through a hyper reality that is influenced even more through Technicolor and animation. With talking flowers and trees, as well as the ability to pick up their roots and move around, people, especially children, may believe that these characters couldn’t actually be in trouble in nature. Children are mislead to believe that these plants are able to communicate with us and that humans would never hurt
At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
In conclusion, the impact I personally have on the planet has surprised me. My personal ecological footprint is much larger than I expected. However, there are measures I can take to drop my current consumption rate, such as altering my recycling choices, making better purchasing decisions, and adopting the reduce, reuse, and recycle concept throughout my household. By altering my habits and consumption rate, I can affect my local community tremendously in a positive way for the planet Earth.
Giving to others through humanitarian projects is not only inclusive of providing monetary solutions for food. Philosophies and intention to reach specific goals are also associated with the needs of others. The Hunger Project is designed with the central goal of eradicating poverty. However, it is found that this is not done only by feeding the poor, but instead through empowerment initiatives that allow others to change their lives. When looking at the approach used to The Hunger Project, it can be seen that the ability to provide empowerment to others will assist in changing lives through donations. The impact which is made by making a donation creates an initiative not only through the power of changing lives of those in need. It also alters the socio political landscape and the global society at large. This impact is one which can redefine the overall functions in the globe, specifically by eradicating poverty.
Rainforests once covered 14% of the worlds land surface, however now it only covers a mere 6%. It is estimated that all rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Trees are becoming more needed and used everyday. We need them cut down for many reasons such as paper and timber, while also needing them ‘untouched’ for other reasons like oxygen, we have to ask ourselves, which is more important? At the current rate, most of the rainforests are being cut down for resources like paper and timber, but less importance is being placed on main resources like oxygen.
I often hear people say “I want to change the world!” but they are not always quite sure about how they will accomplish it. When looking at myself; I can’t deny the fact that I have also used the sentence mentioned above at some point in my life. We tend to see all the social problems that are occurring across the world like; war, terrorism, poverty, starvation and diseases. But sometimes you cannot help the macro level of people; you cannot help everyone that is suffering on our planet. But what you can do is that you can simply help people on a micro level; you can help individuals that surround you on an everyday basis. People tend to think that the society should solve all the problems; that the authorities should take
Along side the demand for pollution correction, is the desire to create a sustainable future for the generations to come. Throughout human existence, people have trained and refined their youth in hope that their offspring could live a better life than they once did. Consciousness regarding our involvement with the temperamental cli...
...dearly-held, unconscious collective assumptions may impede our chances for survival. Or, as Poliakoff, et. al., noted, “fundamental changes in technology are adopted… only when they provide real advantage” (810). Are human beings inherently selfish, or are they capable of rising above that? Will we use this power we have developed to help ourselves, or to attempt to help the world? “Why can’t we achieve a better balance between people, resources, and the environment? … The complete answers to these questions lie deeply within the complex realms of science, philosophy, religion, economics, and politics.” (170). The answers may be complicated. The truth is, industrialization has changed our relationship to the environment. It has enabled us to hurt it far more than any other species, but it has also given us the ability to help. The power of choice now lies with us.
...wledge that current human activities are destroying the earth. Humans taking responsibility toward sustainability is urgent because much of the injury inflicted on earth is irreversible. Drastic, comprehensive changes in all levels of society have to be made before long because the effects of environmental damage are permanent.
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
... By showing the world the severity of our need for conservation, we will be able to save the earth and get the most out of our resources. We need to fix this problem before it becomes uncontrollable to the point of having no resources to meet our needs. By reducing our consumption of resources, we will be able to become closer to fixing the problem of global warming, high gasoline prices and pesticide-filled meats. The outcome of respecting our world and “going green” will better how we live our lives, our communities and the environment.
We all belong to the same world and all of us have the same responsibilities towards the world and its environment. This fact might be hard to digest, but if we continue to pollute the Earth at the current rate, all of the world’s ocean waters will become one-hundred-thirty percent acidic. This means that the ocean will be unable to sustain most of its marine life and only a few creatures will be able to survive in the water. A big population of people think that they do not or have few responsibilities towards the environment. People think that the governor of a country should take steps to help the environment. They leave it to scientists since they have the technology to prevent pollution, or that is what most people think. There are more responsibilities to the world each individual has than most of realize. The amount of negligence and ignorance of humans towards the Earth is taking a heavy toll.
