My First Job Shadow

My first job shadow was on an accountant from the Greenwalt accountant firm in Mechanicsburg. It was an interesting first experience to the career world outside of the education world which I have been familiar with for many years now. Becoming an accountant was something that was intriguing to me as a young 9th grader because I knew it dealt with math and that many accountants have high salaries. I have always had a passion for mathematics and through my highschool years have challenged myself with higher level math courses. As I was researching the shadow I found that it did not deal with math as much as I had expected. Much of it did not make sense to me but I tried to grasp the majority of the topics we discussed. I got to shadow Matthew A. Witmer at the Greenwalt and Company, P.C. who was a very friendly man. Right off the back I was introduced to his colleagues and then it was back to work. The first thing we did after discussing about ourselves was sit in for a required video that each accountant at Greenwalt has to watch. He informed me about how accountants must watch a certain amount of hours of a video that is available for all accountants. It is similar to a teachers required in service days. William Stowman who teaches at Messiah College on may first 2017. He is the music department Co-Chair at Messiah and has been a leader for me for many years. He certainly is a person I look up to and an extremely talented musician. I have known him for many years from working with him at Mechanicsburg and being able to work with him at Messiah through various ensembles. I got to spend a day with him teaching and talking about his job. Watching a lesson occur from the outside rather than being taught or teaching was a great experience. Seeing how he dealt with the players problems gave me another perspective. It was a great way to learn about how to teach well and has helped me as I have a student I give private lessons to right now. We also discussed how flexible his schedule is and he showed me how he can rearrange it to meet with all his students and his classes he teaches. Another large part to the career is that he has to give back to the music world and play for others. He shared how in a few weeks he would be playing and attending the International Trumpet Guild.
