In the story “My Favorite Chaperone”, many different things occur. Some of the major characters in the story are, Maya, Nurzhan, Mama, Papa, Aunt Madina, and Shannon, which is Maya’s best friend. Nurzhan is Maya’s younger brother, and Mama and Papa are their parents. In “My Favorite Chaperone”, there are two main conflicts. The first one is that Maya and her family had no choice but to come to America, and leave their home. The family was not fitting in very well, and the only person that they knew in America, which was Maya and Nurzhan’s Aunt Madina, had left to live in another part of America with her husband.The family was heartbroken. Maya, Nurzhan, and their father were called up front to the principal's office. Maya was there so she could translate for Papa, because he didn’t know a lot of english. After talking with the principle about Nurzhan’s behavior, Papa punished Nurzhan for his wrong actions. On another day, after school, Maya and her best friend, Shannon were walking outside. After they got outside, Maya and Shannon’s crushes showed up. Maya’s crush was Daniel, and Shannon’s was David. They were both on the wrestling team for the school. They both thought that they were stronger than each other. David started to carry Shannon to show Daniel how strong he was. After David started to carry Shannon, Daniel decided to carry Maya. Maya loved to be held in Daniel’s arms, and she enjoyed every second of it. Soon after that, Papa had arrived at the school in his cab, and was furious at the sight of them playing around. Maya hurried into the cab, and Papa drove her home, and was very angry. The last major event that occurred in the story, was when Maya and Nurzhan’s mother injured her foot. There is a slight glimmer of hope when the school year ends and the girls all receive their report cards. They stand eagerly in the hallway, none of them can break their gaze at the slips of paper in their teacher’s hands. Pashtana finishes 15th in her class and in this moment looks forward to a new year in the 8th grade. Unfortunately, Pashtana and her family were living off of $7 a week, a dollar to spend a day. She soon got married to her cousin and has not been back to school since their last day.
One of the characters who was a major influence in Ricky’s life is his mother. She is a very strong willed and opinionated person. As Rivera points out at the beginning of the novel “I am still amazed that I really don’t know who this woman is. None of us do. My brothers and sisters have conflicting fictions of where Chero is from, but we agree that if we could just pinpoint an exact geographical moment of being, we could start to figure out mother out.” (3) The author reflects on his respect for his mother when he writes about her determination, her purpose, her willingness to confront bosses, teachers, neighbors and husbands even as he states “to this day I still wonder who this woman is.” (10 )
In “Confetti Girl”, the narrator disagrees with her father and questions how much he cares about her and in “Tortilla Girl”, the narrator questions if her mother was taking her into account of her new plans. Tension is shown to be caused in the stories “Confetti Girl” and “Tortilla Sun” due to the parent and narrator not having the same point of view. In this story, a young girl named Izzy lives alone with her mother. One day, the mother surprises her by explaining that she is going to Costa Rica to do some research, and that Izzy is going to her grandmother’s house while she is away.
In “Enrique’s Journey”, by Sonia Nazario a young boy from Honduras, sets out to reunite with his mother, Lourdes, that abandoned him when he was just five years old. Lourdes leaves to the United States, in hopes to find a better job as an immigrant and to better provide for her family. After many years of suffering without his mom, he travels through Central America to the United States in order to finally reunite with her. He finds his mother beginning to move on as she has a little daughter, named Diana. They run into problems of resentment. Will they be able to finally be a family? ...m. Without the “struggle” which didn’t come easy she wouldn’t have any passion for the person she wanted to be, she would have built the identity she did. She was able to characterize herself through trial and error, the assaults, the poverty, and the abusive men. Without these experiences she couldn’t have defined herself any better than she has. Sandra Cisneros didn’t only write The House on Mango Street for fun or because it was about her life but because many people that come from the same Mexican-American society can relate, even people from other cultures. She states "You, the reader, are Esperanza.... You cannot forget who you are." And Cisneros is right, no matter what the struggle is that you’ve gone through you can’t hide it, you can’t just put make up over it and forget, it’s not possible. The only thing to do is accept it and move towards a better life.

Gene jumped into the river even though he’s scared because of Finny’s persistence. After the two boys jumped, the other three refuses to do the jumping, so they headed back for dinner. Into their way back, the 2 best friends wrestle with one another and missed dinner. Consequently, they went straight to their rooms. Mr. Prud’homme, a substitute teacher for the summer session, went to Gene and Finny to discipline them the next morning for missing dinner, but he was soon won over by Finny’s ebullient talkativeness and leaves without giving punishment.
Shauzia has been saving up to leave for Paris for a while now and she is super close to her goal. Some days later Shauzia has a plan to get more money but Parvana doesn’t like the plan. The plan is to dig up bones and sell them. Parvana agrees to do it and they dig up bones for a few days. After a while days are getting pretty routine until they go to a soccer field to watch some soccer and Taliban soldiers come on the field with prisoners and cut their hands off. They both run out of the field and stay home for a while. Once they get back to work Parvana finds out that her older sister is getting married and her mom’s going to the wedding and they want Parvana to go too. Parvana refuses and stays home. Then, her father gets out of jail and they all decide to go to her sister’s wedding.
Samantha’s mom made homemade pizza and it was really good. Thomas said everyone ready, Lucas said yeah i'm good I have my flower’s for my grandfather Kevin. They start walking to White Brook Cemetery, Thomas, Samantha, Emma and Jacob are talking about what happened with Nancy bullying Lauren, meanwhile Lauren is asking Lucas about his grandfather and ask how he died and how much times he got to meet him, Lucas said I meet him a lot of times, he was a good person to talk to, Lauren says he sounds like a nice guy, Lucas says he was. So they split up Thomas went with Lucas and Lauren, Samantha,Emma and Jacob then went together, a minute later Emma and Samantha were talking and they turned around and Jacob was gone, Emma said oh my god he’s gone, Samantha then screamed Jacob they heard a noise and ran. She takes a job in a white lady named Ms. Cullinan’s home as a maid, who calls her Mary for her own convenience and lack of respect. This enrages Maya and in order to get away she smashes the finest china to get her fired. At her eighth-grade graduation, a white man comes to speak in front of everyone and he states that black students can only become athletes or servants which makes Maya furious. Later, when Maya develops a nasty toothache, Momma decides to take her to a white dentist who refuses to work on her. Momma claims that she lent him money during the Great Depression so he owes her a favor but he says he’d rather stick his hands in a dogs’ mouth. Lastly, one day while Bailey is walking home he sees a dead black man rotting in a river and a white man present at the scene says he will put both the dead man and Bailey in his truck. This terrifies Bailey and Momma wants to get them out of Staples so she sends them to Vivian’s again in San Francisco. There they live with Vivian and her husband Daddy Clidell who is a nice man to Maya, and has a lot of money from his businesses. One summer Maya goes to live with her father Big Bailey and his girlfriend Dolores, who are poor and live in a trailer. The mother from “Tuesday Siesta” just lost her son and had gone with her daughter to the priest’s house to go visit her son’s grave… ““He’s the thief who was killed here last week”, said the woman in the same tone voice, “I am his mother”” (Marquez 374). Rosaura’s mother was concerned that her daughter would be used/treated as a maid, instead of being treated like every other guest. Her daughter is separated from the rest of the people at the party because she is not as wealthy and she is only the maid’s daughter. Rosaura being an ignorant child, refused to believe this at the beginning of the story and throughout the party. She finally comes to the realization that she cannot break through class stereotypes. “In her hand appeared two bills. You really and truly earned this, she said handing them over. The story begins when Matthew and Marilla want to adopt a boy. Instead, when Matthew goes to Carmody to get him, he finds that there is a girl instead. Her name is Anne Shirley. He takes her anyway and Marilla gets mad. She tries to give her to someone else, but they don’t like her so Marilla decides to keep her. Anne met Diana one day. They become best friends. One the first day of school, Anne met Gilbert Blythe. He made Anne so mad by calling her carrots she hit him over the head with her slate and broke it. She never forgave him for saying that about her. One day Anne has Dianna over to her house and Diana drinks raspberry cordial and gets drunk. Anne gets in trouble and she can’t see Diana anymore. She couldn’t talk to her. A while later, Anne is at her home when she sees Diana running towards the door. She says that her sister is sick and Anne goes to Diana’s house and helps get her sister better. Matthew called the doctor. After that, Anne was allowed to see Diana again. Diana had a birthday party and the girls started to play truth or dare. Anne got a dare to walk across the roof. She fell and broke her ankle and had to moss the first part of school.
Another concept of motherhood as featured is that of strength where after her parents divorce, Maya’s mother is able to move on with her life and even support her daughter against her boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. Here, Maya considers the aspect of strength as one of the pillars of motherhood and she persists with it despite her doubts and fears as a young woman. When she goes back to Momma’s house after Mr. Freeman’s death, she experiences the strength of her grandmother in helping her to overcome her silence.
As soon as Mama appears on stage, before she speaks a single word, the stage directions tell us, the audience, that Mama is a strong woman (40). She has endured many things, among them the loss of a child, and now the loss of her husband and yet she preserves.
