I have never really thought how different places could be from each other until our family vacation. This summer my family went to Maui, Hawaii. In Maui, they grow and eat many different types of food because of the different soil and the warmer climate. The people of Maui are very generous and polite to others, especially to those who are there to learn about Maui. These are just a few differences I noticed on our trip to Maui that helped me realize how different places could be.
The first difference that I noticed when we arrived, was the land. We had to fly around the island’s volcano before we could land. That is when I first noticed how different the land was. When I think of mountains I imagine tall, brown, and snow capped mountains.
When I stepped out of the hot, airless plane into the bright, dazzling sunlight beaming down across the burning concreate, I felt excited and nervous. Holding my beach bag in my hand and slipping my Ray Ban sunglasses on with my other, I flip-flopped down the airspace. Overhead I heard the screams of gulls and the chatter of the small fluffy birds. I suddenly realized I had arrived to Hawaii. This trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me because I got to witness the beauty of nature that Hawaii has to offer.
To be able to see two different countries, one being first-world and one being third-world, is an experience out of this world. To study abroad or to become part of another country's culture gives a person a chance to recognize things that they often looked past before. Someone may realize how every person on this Earth is similar in the way that we all have good in our hearts and welcome others into our homes and hearts. Someone may also realize how every country has a unique culture and despite someone may disagree with aspects of their culture no one can not agree with the fact that each culture is truly outstanding. Less than a mile away was the caldera and it was very surreal knowing that within running distance was volcanic lava boiling beneath the surface of the Earth waiting to one day erupt again. The ground was flat and cracked all around. We turned back up the dirt path to head up the trail into the foliage of the forest again, finally finding our way back after over an hour of searching and pondering. The Hawaiian islands are unlike any other place in the word in person. So much foliage and wildlife exists that you cannot find anywhere else, and each island is unique in its own little way without any controversy. This experience with my husband showed me how geologically diverse a given area of land can be and how nature can affect an ecosystem over a long period of time.
As a Haitian immigrant, my parents and I would spend our family vacations in our hometown of Port-au- Prince, Haiti. I would enjoy participating in family activities such as card games, cooking, and just the quality time that we spent together. We could play these games and laugh amongst each other for hours, without a care in the world merely telling jokes and listening to the elder parables. Amongst my family I felt untouchable. Like a tree in the wind, my only cares were that of the breeze and the beauty of my foundation. In the sway of the wind I was overcome with a sense of peace.
Living in two different places is an experience that opens people’s mind to a new way of thinking. The diversities of each country has its own appeal and often times, we find ourselves comparing and contrasting these nations based a variety of aspects. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences in geography, climate, tradition, and economy between the two countries, Jamaica and the United States of America are extensive.
Langston Hughes uses poetic elements to express the reader his feelings towards America. Langston Hughes is very upset that America is not what it promised to be. Living in America, he never saw America to be the land of the free, what it promised to be. Prior to the beginning of my first semester at community college my cousin and I endeavored on our last summer weekend trip to “The Big Apple”. Known as the city that never sleeps there are numerous diverse attractions and it could not have been a more beautiful weekend to experience this big city. This was the largest city I have ever been to and we had the pleasure of going to the beach, central park and traveling to Manhattan.
Different cultures, or environments make up how people live their lives and how they may act on a daily basis. These cultures are common all throughout the world, even throughout the different places within the United States. Going on my school trip to New York City made me aware of these cultures changes and when are plane landed back in Minnesota I was so thankful to be back to the places and faces I had always been used to.
I stood in the town square of the small village. Like any other normal day, people were going about their day-to-day business. Old men sat on a wooden bench beneath a large tree and predicted this year’s crop. Women shared town gossip as they shopped for groceries, and children sucked on lollipops while they played along the cobblestone streets. However, unlike any other day, the whole crowd had stopped in unison and darted their eyes in my direction, their full attention on me. I heard hushed whispers as I passed by the crowd, “Americano!” “Oh mio Dio, guarda com’è alto!” I lowered my head as I thought to myself, “What the hell am I doing here? I’m in a country where I don’t know the language or the culture, and I have another nine and a half months until I go home!” I didn’t know it then, but those nine and a half months that lay in front of me would be the experience that would challenge my views and goals and help shape the person I am today.
Coming from Guam, a place that is considered a territory with so much different cultures and people, it opened my eyes to how other people see things. Although there are differences, there were many similarities and I realized that there were more to diversity, and cultures when I moved from the island to the mainland. The move exposed me to other definitions of diversity like region of the U.S populated with one culture over another, and the different types of food people shared and enjoyed. Earlier this month my family and I vacationed to California for a week. While in California we went to Disneyland for three of the five days we were there, which is most definitely a generous amount of time to experience how different cultures interact with one another. Disneyland is a prime example of different cultures, diverse culture communication, nonverbal and verbal actions and appearance.
My favorite summer vacation was when my Father took me to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
