“No man’s knowledge here can go beyond his experience.”- John Locke An abundance of knowledge is found through many opportunities around us. The classroom is a common place to learn new things; however a lot of information and skills are acquired outside of it because there are some things that are gained only through experience. Through my educational journey through high school I have come across opportunities that are present outside the walls of the classroom. I was lucky enough to grab hold of one of these opportunities in which I shadowed different doctors in hospitals and clinics around my community. I wanted a one-on-one type of experience with medical professionals and this could only be done during personal time away from school, so I started off by volunteering at Doctor’s Hospital. I learned many new assisting techniques and different steps in becoming successful in the medical field. Every week I would travel to a different section of the hospital to offer my assistance to doctors in need. I worked from the neonatal intensive care unit to the respiratory units there at the hospital. Besides helping out, I also gained a lot of experience by shadowing these doctors and living out their daily routine. I learned three important characteristics that will stay with me for the rest of my life. They include showing strong work ethic, excelling in communication skills, and working as a team to get things done more efficiently. I have learned communication can be used in many other areas of life, including other career fields, because it is a way of getting your thoughts across to the person you are trying to communicate with. Communication is also necessary in understanding those around you in the workplace. Work ethic is very important as well because there always needs to be a desire to accomplish a task given in the workplace. During my time volunteering at the clinics I learned that work ethic is an important factor in completing a given set of instructions. I learned to show work ethic even in the smallest of tasks by having a good attitude, because the way you work reflects the overall person that you are. The most effective way to incorporate communication and work ethic is by working as a team. Special floors in the hospital required me to work well with others. These floors contained critically ill patients and in order to restore good health their needs were to be meet with a specialized group of team members.
