Making the right Decision
When do we begin to make a decision on our dream House? After, living in a large house we need to make a decision on the right time to down size. We knew we needed less space. So we made a decision to begin our search. With great excitement we have begun looking thru differ books with house plans in them. We were in shocked there were so many plans out there to look at and so many styles. There’s so many decisions on what we think would be a dream house. How many floors? How many rooms? How much space do we need? What do we want the design of our house to look like? Where do we want to live? Do we want a brick house, wood house or vinyl siding house? There were days that we realized we could not wait to begin our new journey. We could not wait to get into our dream house.
First thing, we needed to decide was how to begin saving some money to help with our dream house. After, living in a two story house with 5 bedrooms, we knew we needed to down size. We came up with a plan that we could save some money by selling our house and moving into a camper. So, we begin our new journey looking for a camper to live in while we build a new house. After living in the city for last 10 years. We had choice on where we would like to live. Would we build near the water, in the country, or in the city? We would drive around many weekends enjoying the scenes looking at different place to build our dream house. We loved looking at the water front properties. It has always been a dream to live on the water. Then we look at places in city driving around looking at the different community’s. Next we looked at land in the country where we could buy two acres or more. We fell in love with a perfect piece of land in the country and made the decision to buy five acres. We decide that we could move a camper on land and begin living there while we were building our dream
Michelle Alexander’s book, The New Jim Crow, as well as Eugene Jarecki’s documentary, The House I Live In, both discuss the controversial issues surrounding the War on Drugs, mass incarceration, and drug laws. Ultimately, both Alexander and Jarecki concede that the court systems have systematically hindered growth and advancement in black communities by targeting young African Americans, primarily male, that have become entangled in drugs due to their socioeconomic status. There is a disturbing cycle seen in black underprivileged neighborhoods of poverty leading to drug use and distribution to make money that inevitably ends with the person in question landing in prison before likely repeating these actions upon their release. Upon reading “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen, many readers may find the character Nora to be a rather frivolous spending mother of three who is more concerned about putting up a front to make others think her life is perfect, rather than finding herself. At the beginning of the play, this may be true, but as the play unfolds, you see that Nora is not only trying to pay off a secret debt, but also a woman who is merely acting as her husbands “doll” fulfilling whatever he so asks of her. Nora is not only an independent woman who took a risk, but also a woman whose marriage was more along the lines of a father-child relationship.
When we see little kids running around and playing or sound asleep, most of us think of them as angels sent from heaven. We, as parents and future parents, love to see our children grow to become handsome sons and beautiful daughters. We do everything in our hands to keep them in the right tracks to become respectful human beings. We would want to be with them every second of their lives, but at some point we have to let them go and set them free. At one point in life, everyone hold secrets, including our own children.

Upon renovating the quaint little house on the hill with my mom, my own feelings toward the house changed dramatically. Before the project took off, I hesitated to step foot inside the building. The odor and dim lighting made it difficult to envision a successful result, but once we finished I was tempted to move in myself. This is the goal. Taking on this second project, I’d do my best to make the house one I’d love to live in while not allowing myself to implement my personal style preferences. The result is a home both move-in ready and open for visitors.

To achieve the American dream is a great accomplishment that requires financial adequacy. Due to financial insufficiencies, owning a home can be difficult, if not impossible for many individuals of lower income. Economic fluctuations often cause inconsistency in housing prices and availability.3 The price of a home correlates to the cost and availability of materials, needed manpower and the duration of construction. These logistical obstacles need to be overcome if the American dream is to be attained by the majority.4 To engineer a faster, more cost effective means of production is a challenge, but for the solution to be well designed and well crafted is a far greater task.
Having a house and having a home used to coincide. Families used to live in the same house for generations, but now the sentimental value of having a house has changed. As Quindlen puts it, “There was a time when where you lived often was where you worked and where you grew the food you ate and even where you were buried. When that era passed, where you lived at least was where your parents had lived and where you would live with your children when you became enfeebled” (Quindlen 215). However, over time even that changed. Now we have grown to live in a house and then move on like it was nothing. Sentimental value for a house has dwindled. Quindlen demonstrates that “suddenly, where you lived was where you lived for three years, until you could move on to something else and something else again” (Quindlen 215). However, for those without a house, they would give anything to have that sentimental feeling that used to come with having a house. But that’s just the problem; for most a house and a home no longer coincide. We can own a house but not have a home, or vice versa. After all, “Home is where the heart is. There’s no place like it” (Quindlen 214). People can have a home without having a house. A home simply means having a family,
A home for me is not a house. A house is just a building that you fill
“Home is where the heart is.” In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros develops this famous statement to depict what a “home” really represents. What is a home? Is it a house with four walls and a roof, the neighborhood of kids while growing up, or a unique Cleaver household where everything is perfect and no problems arise? According to Cisneros, we all have our own home with which we identify; however, we cannot always go back to the environment we once considered our dwelling place. The home, which is characterized by who we are, and determined by how we view ourselves, is what makes every individual unique. A home is a personality, a depiction of who we are inside and how we grow through our life experiences. In her personal, Cisneros depicts Esperanza Cordero’s coming-of-age through a series of vignettes about her family, neighborhood, and personalized dreams. Although the novel does not follow a traditional chronological pattern, a story emerges, nevertheless, of Esperanza’s search to discover the meaning of her life and her personal identity. The novel begins when the Cordero family moves into a new house, the first they have ever owned, on Mango Street in the Latino section of Chicago. Esperanza is disappointed by the “small and red” house “with tight steps in front and bricks crumbling in places” (5). It is not at all the dream-house her parents had always talked about, nor is it the house on a hill that Esperanza vows to one day own for herself. Despite its location in a rough neighborhood and difficult lifestyle, Mango Street is the place with which she identifies at this time in her life.
Buying and owning your home is part of the American dream. Although the dream itself has since changed, the home still remains the main focal point. Today owning a home doesn’t necessarily mean a house. People now buy duplexes, cooperative apartments, and condominiums. For some families it could take up to a couple of generations before it’s able to have the capabilities of buying a home. To many people it means a certain achievement that only comes after years of hard work. It is a life altering decision and one of the most important someone can make in their lifetime. The reasons behind the actual purchase could vary. Before anything is done, people must understand that it’s an extraneous process and it is a long term project.
A simpler, easy-going way of life is being adopted by people young and old, single and married, employed and not so, across the nation. Tiny houses are residential buildings typically less than 600 square feet – larger than a shed, but not quite big enough to be called a cottage. They have nearly all the facilities and rooms a regular home has, but in a more compact area, without all the “excess” space. This trend of down-sizing, also known as the Tiny House Movement, isn’t a new one. Rather, it’s the revival of a past idea. In the 1950’s the average American single-family home was 980 square feet. As of 2009, that average has increased by 275% to an enormous 2,700 square feet. Garages take up about 15% of that size while appliances fill another 10%. American refrigerators are double the size of those in Europe, and use enough energy to power six televisions for 10-12 hours per day (Strobel).
