Have you ever thought how someone 's else life has changed due to an event that happened to them during their life as they grew up? As many of us see life can change in just a blink of an eye while for others it might take longer for them to have changes in theirs. Sometimes we want something in our life that at one point we may not have due to an event that is making us realize why the things are happening. We all have different points of views that can make us think the opposite of an event or have a similar mentality to those who are going through an event in their life probably because one has probably had a similar event happen at one point of their life.
To be the person who I am today has risen by many obstacles brought by life, especially when those happy moments turn into something horrifying. The person who I am today started at a young age of not wanting to be dependent on my parents, being responsible for myself and for what I have done, but always wanting to strive for the better education I can get. With not just volunteer work at a nursing home but also helping at hospitals where there is more than twenty or thirty ill who would like to see someone young care for them. As I look back on my life, I can see how a lot of certain events have shaped my life. Where it They helped me become more independent, have some of the greatest accomplishments, and understand the importance of living your own life.
A person does not experience many events that shape their life in a large way, whether it be for better or worse. I have had just one major situation that has sculpted me into the person that I am today. In February of 2008, I was diagnosed with a life changing disease; it would relieve me of the agony I had been experiencing for as long as I could remember, but also restrict my diet for the rest of my life.
I worked with Dementia and Alzheimer patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant for almost three years. Working with the elderly has been one of my greatest achievements. I assisted my residents with bathing, grooming and making them feel comfortable. I was able to create a favorable environment for my residents while working with them. I had the opportunity to see patients go from early stage to their last stage of dementia. This gave me an opportunity to want to do more for people who are in need of my care. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me, even at a young age, to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. I remember the exact moment when I decided that becoming a pediatric nurse might be what I wanted to do with my life. My family and I were down the shore for a family vacation, which we do every summer. One rainy night we decided to stay in the hotel and watch a movie as a family but it did not go as intended. All of a sudden my sister started to complain of agonising pains in her kidney so we rushed her to Atlantic City Medical Center where she was diagnosed with kidney stones at age 6. This hospital then transferred her to St.Peters Childrens Hospital where I met the most kind hearted nurse. This woman cared for my sister with so much love, not only as a nurse but as a person. Once she entered the room my sister had a smile on her face even though she was in pain at times. As I
I found a job as CNA for the patient who had disabilities. One patient in particular changed the direction of my life and started me thinking about working in medicine. I took care of an older woman who was unable to ambulate due to her diagnosis of stroke. She experienced chronic weakness of bilateral lower extremity so I supported her with my arms to steady her. When I looked into her eyes, I could feel her saying, “you truly care about me, understand me, and thank you for taking the time to sense my expression and desire.” That’s the care all of us have deep inside, where our motives no longer become self-seeking but other-seeking. I interned a cardiologist where I got to see the life of a physician as he went about his daily routine. I achieved getting my Certified Nursing Assistant license after assisting patients at a nursing home. I became a camp counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where I took care of a 10-year-old child during a summer camp. Through these experiences, I gained confidence in my character and purposefulness. Furthermore, I went on a mission trip to Kenya where I experienced life in a third world country. It was here where my eyes were opened to see a world that is in dire need of help. These people are malnourished, living in detrimental conditions without accessible health care. The experiences I had in Kenya reminded me to never take anything for granted. My engagement acting on all these opportunities fueled my perseverance to pursue my career in health
What attracted me to the nursing profession was a desire to be a caregiver. Being a nurse for 7 years has been rewarding and very challenging at times. I was not aware how to be a nurse until I became the patient. During my stay in the hospital, my personal experience being a patient taught me how important it was to continue my nursing education. It is important for me to be an advocate, competent, and trustworthy individual to patients and families.
Everyone has a story, a pivotal moment in their life that started to mold them into the person they are today and may even continue to mold you to the person that you will become, I just had mine a little bit earlier than others. When I was three years old my brother became a burn survivor. It may seem too early for me to remember, but I could never forget that day. Since then, I have grown, matured and realized that what my family and I went through has been something of a benefit to be and an experience that has helped me in deciding what I want to do with the rest of my life.

I am currently in the nursing program at Motlow to get my associates degree and to begin my career in the medical field. After graduation I will attend MTSU to receive my bachelors as an RN and work in a Primary Care Clinic. From there I will attend Vanderbilt for my masters as a Licensed Nurse Practitioner, LPN, then hoping to move from general medicine into a specialty clinic that focuses on specific diseases and disorders. Therefore, I chose the following 3 topics because of my professional pathway and I have very close relatives and friends who are affected by these disabilities.
Up until a few years ago I never thought that one of my grandparents would be in a nursing home. I had always been lucky to have them healthy. However, this changed about a year ago when my grandfather had a mini-stroke, which caused him to require extra care my grandmother could not provide. Watching my family deal with my grandfather made me aware of the care and services the elderly need and has made me realize how important it is to volunteer at a local nursing home.
My junior year in high school in the Health care program consist of class room learning medical terminology, pharmacology and skills of being nurse; however, in my senior year, I had the privilege to attend clinical at local nursing homes, hospitals and veterinary clinics. I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
